The Menendez brothers, Erik and Lyle, were resentenced in mid-May, and they were given 50 years. While it sounds harsh, it does mean they can file for parole. However, the latest news reveals that they will have to wait.

How Long Is The Delay?

The Hollywood Reporter reported the update on May 20. According to the outlet, “Their next hearing was scheduled for June 13, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced that the brothers’ parole hearing dates have been pushed back to Aug 21 and 22.”

The news comes after mixed reactions greeted the news of their resentencing on May 13, which saw them remain in prison for the 1989 murder of their parents. Some people believed the ruling was unfair. Despite still being incarcerated, the resentencing marked a shift. The brothers have already served 35 years, and their original conviction offered no chance of parole.

Parole Takes Time

Now, eligible for parole, albeit after a potentially lengthy process, it’s a step towards potential freedom. The question of judicial fairness was raised by those following the case.

One person, responding to news coverage on YouTube, opined, “The judge made the right decision. D.A Hochman is a disgrace. He clearly didn’t want them out but had no real reason to oppose resentencing.”

A Long Legal Fight

Gavin Newsom demanded that the parole board conduct a risk assessment before sending its findings to his office for a final decision. The brothers have now spent over three decades behind bars, and finally, they can start their bid for freedom.

The Facebook account of Lyle Menendez got an update. In it, the text said:

…The guys’ parole hearing date has been postponed to August 21/22.
Given the fact that first time parole seekers statistically have a much harder time being granted parole, this gives the guys and their attorneys more time to prepare and gives them the best opportunity to be the exception to the rule! It’s a good thing.

Many people responded to the news, and it seems that many folks now support the Menendez brothers getting out of prison. Here are some of the reactions:

  • I can’t imagine how emotionally and mentally draining this has to be on them and the family.
  • I had a feeling the June 13 date was too good to be true. However, it was a fantastic idea to at least get the date on the docket, so they weren’t starting from scratch…
  • Hold tight Erik and Lyle! It’s a waiting game!
  • Well it’s annoying it’s pushed back, good to prepare better more! Gives more of a chance, praying.
