Menendez Brothers Resentenced – Was The Judge Fair?

Menendez brothers resentenced - California Correctional Department

The Menendez brothers, Erik and Lyle, were resentenced on May 13. Mixed reactions greeted the news that they remain in prison for the murder of their parents in 1989. Some people believe that the ruling was unfair. Read on to find out why.

The Brothers Can Now Apply For Parole

The brothers have served 35 years so far, and their family hoped that by now, they could leave prison. While that could happen in the future, for now, they will remain behind bars. ABC News reported that they were “resentenced on Tuesday to 50 years to life in prison, which makes them eligible for parole.” However, “the parole process will be long and could take years.”

Being resentenced to 50 years might seem appalling and nothing to dance about. However, their original conviction saw them imprisoned with no chance of parole. So, it’s a step in the right direction for them. In March, the DA, Hochman, claimed that their allegation that they killed Kitty and Jose because of abuse was nothing but a tall story.

Was The Judge Fair?

When the outlet covered the news on YouTube, one person who followed the hearings opined, “The judge made the right decision. D.A Hochman is a disgrace. He clearly didn’t want them out but had no real reason to oppose resentencing.”

Nonetheless, there were vastly differing opinions from those who watched. Many of them feel that enough is enough, and the brothers should have been immediately released. Here are are few of those comments:

  • They should’ve been released smh.
  • They should have been released.
  • IMO, The Menendez Brothers have served enough time. They should be released immediately.
  • How outrageous, after everything their parents did to them. I can’t imagine the horrors.

The trouble with those who believe the abuse stories is that little evidence of that ever arrived. Notably, they admitted via recordings that they lied.

Those Against Their Release

Lyle and Erik were not kids when they gunned down their mom and dad and then partied hard on their money. Lyle was 21 years old, and Erik was 18. For many people, the idea of a release is appalling.

In the comments section, one critic of the brothers wrote, “These guys killed their parents for money. No sympathy.”

Another one said, “Do the Crime, do the Time! Life means Life. There (sic) parents did nothing to them, except give them everything and look what it got them.”

Here’s a final example of those who feel that prison is where the brothers belong: “They murdered their mom and dad with shotguns in their house and then tried to cover it up so they can spend all their money. keep them in jail where they belong.”
