After decades in the spotlight as one of the most recognized models of her time, Naomi Campbell is finally looking back at what it took to become the supermodel she is today.
Even without a partner, Campbell admitted that life is full, especially after welcoming a baby girl earlier this year. She’s also grateful for the support she got from the black community. She may be a trailblazer for black models, but she’s not forgetting her roots and the people who supported her on her journey to the top to become one of the most accomplished models.
Naomi Campbell Reflects On Groundbreaking Career
In a recent interview with The Cut, Naomi shared how she kept herself grounded amidst the highs of her career. She also reminisced on the little sacrifices she was forced to make in order to not only climb to the top, but to stay there as long as she has done.
“I’d say the sacrifice is really finding that soul mate who will understand you,” Campbell told the outlet. “It’s really like you feel if they look at you as if you’re strong… You know, I’m strong, but I’m also sensitive. I know that in relationships I have to compromise.”
Campbell has been public with some of her previous relationships, including those with Russian billionaire Vladislav Doronin, Italian businessman Flavio Briatore, American singer-songwriter Usher, and British rapper Skepta.
Naomi Campbell Has Personal Growth
Naomi’s younger days were plagued with various accusations of the model’s abuse of power and of violent behavior towards others, but from the late ’90s to the 2000s, she noted that she’s done some personal growth and is now in a better place. “I don’t have a problem looking at myself in the mirror anymore and facing and owning who I am. And for sure when I was younger, I wasn’t always using it in the right way. It takes growth.”

Campbell also recognized her mother and the friends who were by her side in the long-run, describing them as her support system.
“I’m not out here on my own,” she told The Cut. “It’s simple, and it’s small. To be with your loved ones who just want to enjoy quality time. I want my friends to flourish. You want to protect those you love. And most importantly, when I reach out to people, and I need help and understanding and guidance, it’s important for me to remember to say ‘Thank you.’ Almost like a threat— ‘You never know when you may need that person to help you again or guide you.'”
She further credited the black community and her fans, who embraced her in the early days of her career, as the reason she made it far in the modeling world, especially at a time when diversity was rare.
“I am grateful to God that my culture embraces me and protects me. My people support me. And defend me. And I do feel, especially in the past few years, I’ve really felt that when people or publications—just newspapers, really—have come at me with an angle that before, I’d have to be out there trying to [defend myself]—well, I never really did justify myself with newspapers, to be honest. But now, I don’t have to say a word.”
