Mary McCartney – Says Driver Didn’t Stop Their Car On Seeing Famous Dad
The Beatles are worldwide famous and Paul McCartney is a living legend. And yet his famous face wasn’t enough to trump the annoyance of pedestrian traffic!
Any diehard Beatle fan ought to remember the famous group walking across zebra crossing outside Abbey Road Studios for the cover of Abbey Road.
For her upcoming documentary “If These Walls Could Sing”, McCartney’s daughter decided to include the studio’s story and got her famous dad to recreate the walk – which almost turned out to be a tragedy.
“The bit where the car nearly ran him over on the zebra crossing, that was so funny,” Mary, 53, told the Mirror during a recent interview. “As we were leaving [the studio], I said, ‘I’ll film you [on the crossing],’ and he went over and this car totally didn’t stop for him!”
But happily, things turned out for the better and Mary completed her project. The next complication was the photographer, filmmaker and author’s nervousness to show her father the work she had done. However, she mustered up the courage at last to take him to the theater to see the documentary.
“The next day, I was at an event and somebody said, ‘I saw your dad and he was talking about the documentary for ages,'” she said. “It’s somewhere he’s really passionate about so when he heard I was doing the documentary, he was really pleased and it made him think about Abbey Road again and a lot of the stories.”
Mary McCartney – Reveals Her Inspiration For the Documentary
Speaking to PEOPLE at the film’s N.Y.C. premiere, Mary McCartney disclosed that the inspiration that kick-started the documentary was seeing a 1977 photo of her parents, Paul and his first wife Linda McCartney, strolling through a crosswalk with a pony in tow.
“I love the picture of my mom going over the zebra crossing. She had a little pony in London,” she said of her mom who died of cancer in 1988. “That’s one of the reasons I wanted to do [the film]. I snuck her into it a few times. There’s an homage to her. She’s my inspiration.”
McCartney’s involvement in the project meant his daughter had access to knowledge that only a Beatle would know.
