Paul Rudd Reveals He Beat Himself Up For Being Out Of Shape To Play Ant-Man in New “Ant-Man” Movie

Training to get back into Ant-Man’s costume for the third installment of the “Ant-Man” movie was tougher this time round and did a number on Paul Rudd, both mentally and physically. However, though it was much harder and required intense training, the actor was able to get the job done. That’s the reason we’re getting “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” on Feb. 17.

Paul Rudd is the March cover star for Men’s Health, and for the cover story, the actor revealed how he overcame dejection on his journey to getting fit again. “I worked really hard to get back into shape for Quantumania, and I realized, ‘Oh my God, this is so much harder than it was [for the last Ant-Man project],” the 53-year-old related. “I had fallen off more than I had in the past.

All of a sudden my clothes fit tight. And I thought, ‘God, this sucks. I can’t even wear these pants.'” “So I’d say to myself, Well, I might as well just eat some of these cookies. I was irritable and self-conscious. I just wasn’t in a good mood. I really beat myself up,'” he added.

Even though he battled with some obstacles mentally to be able to hit the gym and do what needs to be done, Rudd’s work ethics eventually found him putting in the work.

“I can be a hyper-focused person if I have a goal. If I’m doing one of these movies and I know that in four months I have to do a shirtless scene, I’m pretty dialed in,” he explained. “I also try and find the happy medium. I could work out hard and eat perfectly and I’ll still look worse than most of the other Avengers,” Rudd quipped.

Paul Rudd, the 2021 holder of PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive title, has had to bare his chest for some scenes in a movie, but it’s all for comedy’s sake. “Every shirtless scene I had ever done was for comedy’s sake. I had no business doing a shirtless scene [in a superhero movie].”
