Rebel Wilson Tells BBC Her Team Thought Weight Loss Would Damage ‘Funny Fat Girl’ Image

Rebel WilsonRebel Wilson appeared in an interview with BBC News and dished about how her team didn’t fully support her weight loss journey. Some even thought that it would negatively affect her career as the “funny fat girl” on screen.

In the interview, the 41-year-old actress revealed some of the negative comments she got from her team over her “year of health,” especially as it pertained to her on-screen “funny fat girl” image.

“I got a lot of pushback from my own team,” she said, adding that when she told people that she was going to do a year of health and change her life they were skeptical. “They were like, ‘Why? Why would you wanna do that?’ Because I was earning millions of dollars being the funny fat girl and being that person.”

Rebel Wilson fans will recall that the Perfect Pitch actress lost 80 lbs. last year and, though she considered herself a confident woman who loved herself before losing the weight, she says that she knew, deep down, that her “emotional eating” habits were not healthy.

“Like I did not need a tub of ice cream every night. That was me kind of numbing emotions using food, which wasn’t the healthiest thing,” she told cameras. “I think it was dealing with not being a natural performer and having to perform every day. And that pressure and internal stress to be able to perform like that.”

The Isn’t It Romantic star noted that she had received an increasing amount of attention since she had lost the weight whereas before she had felt “invisible.”

“It’s fascinating. Why are people so obsessed with women, in particular, about their looks?” the actress asked, adding that she knew what it was like to be a woman who was “essentially invisible” to most people because of not being viewed as “traditionally beautiful.”

“It’s crazy to try to fit that. It’s just better to be the healthiest version.”
