Selena Gomez Says Being Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder Made Her “Happy”

Selena GomezSelena Gomez has been open about battling with mental health issues, and she’s even used her global platform to help young people suffering from depression and other mental health issues.

A few years ago, the musician, businesswoman, actress and T.V. chef opened up about her Bipolar Disorder diagnosis. Now, she’s sharing how the diagnosis helped her become happier and freer than she’s ever been.

Selena Gomez – Co-Founds Mental Wellness Company Wondermind

When Selena Gomez launched Rare beauty in September 2020, she made a pledge to donate up to $100 million to provide free mental health care services to people from all over the world. So far, the Rare Impact Fund has benefited dozens of people and is set to touch even more lives in the coming years.

This time, Gomez launched a multimedia wellness company, Wondermind, alongside Daniella Pierson and her mother, Mandy Teefey, with the aim of providing free resources that will allow anyone to work on their “mental fitness.”

In order to promote the platform, Gomez sat down for an interview with Good Morning America, where she also opened up about her personal journey navigating mental health.

“It was really freeing to have the information [of being diagnosed with bipolar disorder],” Gomez told Good Morning America on April 4. “It made me really happy because I started to have a relationship with myself, and I think that’s the best part. Like, I’ve probably been the happiest I’ve ever been.”

Previously, the star revealed that she was aware her mental health struggled for years, but she never took the time to work on improving it. She credited professionals and her loving mom (who also has ADHD) for helping her to really work on herself.

“I can’t believe I am where I am mentally, just because of how I took the necessary steps in order to kind of remove myself from that because it’s just not normal. I really want people to be understood and seen and heard. It’s okay to not be okay,” she said.

Selena Gomez – Opens Up About How Her Extended Break From Social Media Helped Her to Work On Her Mental Health

Gomez also discussed how social media played a huge role in her perception of herself when she was in her early 20s. She told InStyle in January, “At one point Instagram became my whole world, and it was really dangerous.”

With 310 million followers, Selena Gomez is one of the most followed people in the whole world on the social media app, coming in after Instagram and football star Christiano Ronaldo.

But she hasn’t really been on the app or on socials for over four years now, because it makes her feel not pretty enough by the “unnecessary hate and comparisons.” She, however, admitted to helping her team curate what they post on her different social media pages.

She described the drastic lifestyle shift to Good Morning America, saying: “It has changed my life completely. I am happier, I am more present, I connect more with people. It makes me feel normal.”

Speaking on the multimedia platform she helped to build, she shared that she hopes it’ll bring access to therapy to people who can’t afford it. She also called it “unfortunate that [mental health resources] cost ridiculous amounts of money.”

Gomez added, “But [like with] Planned Parenthood, there’s a place for women to feel okay and to feel understood, and I want that for mental health. I think it’s so important and I can’t stress it enough how much I care and how much I really, really want people to be understood, seen and heard.”
