Shania Twain Opens Up About Letting Go Of The “Resentment” She Had For Her Ex Husband

Imagine having a loving husband and best friend, and then having the two cheat on you. The betrayal is unspeakable and the anger that anyone put in such a situation would feel is incalculable. For a long time that was Shania Twain when she discovered that her husband of 14 years cheated on her with her long-time friend Marie-Anne.

I guess he’s no longer the one she resents “for life”.

On Feb. 3, 2023, the country legend will release a brand new album, “Queen Of Me”, after so many years. And for her to rise to that stage where she is in total control of her life and craft, she had to address the pains of the past and move on from them.

One of those painful memories was the moment she discovered her ex-husband Robert “Mutt” Lange was cheating on her. And with a close friend nonetheless. The resulting divorce devastated her, as she was a firm believer in true love and thought Lange was her happily ever after.

“It was a very low period in my life,” Twain, 57, recalls of ending her marriage to Lange in 2008.

However, from the pain, something new and beautiful blossomed. She and Marie-Anne’s husband, former Nestlé exec Frédéric Thiébaud, talked during their grieving process and soon became a solace to each other.

“That is a really strong bond that builds over time, that is rare, that you don’t have in every relationship if you don’t have those deep scars in common,” Twain said of Thiébaud. “We were a big part of each other’s healing.”

After she finalized her divorce in 2010, she and Thiébaud tied the knot on New Year’s Day 2011, even though she was a “once bitten fifty times shy” kind of person.

“When I got divorced I said, ‘I’m never getting married again.’ I was definitely one of those people that could have written a million songs about, ‘I’m never going to fall in love again,'” Twain shared. “But Fred was such an undeniable love.”

In fact, they’re still finding new ways to bond, especially since their children, both 21, have moved out and they’ve got the house all to themselves. She called it “a sort of second honeymoon phase.”

“We’re bonded now in a different way without the kids,” she added.

Shania Twain Says “The Resentment” She Had For Her First Husband “Is Gone”

Speaking on where she rests with her former husband, she said she’s moved on from hating him.

“I found peace a long time ago, and maybe peace is forgiveness, you know?” Twain says of moving on from Lange. “I’m able to have more appreciation for him again, not for what happened in our marriage but for all that he contributed to such a great part of my career and my life. We have a beautiful child from it. The resentment is gone.”

Before the split, Twain and Lange worked together on three of her diamond-certified albums (The Woman in Me, Come on Over and Up!). Even though they’ve ceased to be creative partners, she still uses his recording studio.

“That’s kind of our crossroads area, which is, I think, really appropriate. It feels really good to say that. We share engineers, and so we have this music creative zone that we all go to on our own time,” Twain said.
