Shia LaBeouf — About The Wrong Narrative Of “Honey Boy”

Shia said that after his dad saw the movie, his dad observed that what was acted wasn’t in the script Shia sent him to approve, so when he asked Shia, Shia admitted to not including it in the script Shia gave his dad. Shia also revealed that he bullied his dad into permitting him to make the film. Shia also revealed that his dad spanked him one time in his entire 36 years of existence and the spanking was when his dad caught him smoking as a child. “My dad never hit me, never. He spanked me once, one time. And the story that gets painted in Honey Boy is, this dude is abusing his kid all the time.”

Explaining that the one time spanking wasn’t the story he wanted to tell the world but the story of a kid who’s been constantly abused by his dad. “But that wasn’t my narrative, because it didn’t position me as this wounded, fractured child that you could root for, which is what I was using him for.”

Talking about the lifetime stigma he created for his dad because of the movie, Shia said “So, when I got on the phone with him, I took accountability for all of that and knew very clearly that I couldn’t take it back, and my dad was gonna live with this certain narrative about him on a public scale for a very long time, probably the rest of his life.”
