The former American Idol judge better follow through on his promise. Simon Cowell landed a deal with Netflix to find the next global boyband. He’s developing a new talent show to help him find the next One Direction. The top-secret project is currently filming in the UK.
Simon Cowell – Lands Massive Netflix Deal
Simon collaborated with the production Box to Box Films, which made the Netflix series Formula 1: Drive to Survive. This new series comes three years after the cancellation of The X Factor. The UK series is where he found One Direction in 2010.
The boyband has since disbanded and the members went their separate ways. Simon Cowell wants to get that success back. He believes Netflix is the perfect platform for securing talent. The streaming platform has achieved more global success than its competitors Hulu and Max.
“Source is preparing to sign a huge deal with Netflix to find the world’s next biggest boyband,” an insider told The U.S. Sun. “He is working with the team behind Drive to Survive on the show and wanted to get it on a streamer because it fits the audience better. Simon knew The X Factor had grown tired so he wanted to do something that looked completely fresh and new.”
There was a bidding war among the streaming platforms. Most of them jumped at Simon’s idea. He was previously in talks with Apple TV+ and Prime Video before securing a deal with Netflix. The series also has its own PR firm ahead of the show’s announcement and premiere date.
Premiere Date Revealed
This news was first reported in March 2024. Last week, Simon Cowell surprised the UK when he put up a billboard that read, “Simon needs you! Future megastars wanted for new boyband. No time wasters.”
“Every generation deserves a megastar boyband and I don’t think there has been one to have the success of One Direction in over 14 years,” Simon said in a statement. “The industry tends to focus on solo artists – so it usually takes someone from outside to put a group together.”
Simon Cowell is up to the challenge. He’s looking for boyband members that possess talent and chemistry. UK auditions will start July 4th and 5th in Newcastle and continue in Liverpool, Dublin, and London into the first week of August.
