Tom Hanks Wants Us To “Have Faith In Our Own Sensibilities”

You’ve probably heard about the new movement that requires some literature works to be rewritten to erase racist undertones and misogynistic storylines and have them reflect our modern times and keep them from causing offense.

I mean, if you’ve read Ian Fleming’s James Bond series and know how the author describes women and people of color, you might understand why the publishers want it rewritten, or you might not. If you agree with Tom Hanks.

Tom Hanks Slams Censorship Of Classic Works: “We’re All Grownups!”

Tom Hanks is promising to boycott woke books that feature rewrites meant to change some of the book’s passages into what the original author never intended. He voiced his opinion on the latest airing of BBC’s Radio 4 when he was asked what he thought of the censorship of works by prominent authors, including Roald Dahl and Agatha Christie’s.

The star replied: “Well, I’m of the opinion that we’re all grown-ups here. And we understand the time and the place and when these things were written. And it’s not very hard at all to say: that doesn’t quite fly right now, does it?”

The “Forrest Grump” and “Toy Story” star added: “Let’s have faith in our own sensibilities here, instead of having somebody decide what we may or may not be offended by.”

He said that he’d advise anyone against reading books that has been rewritten for the sake of sensitive texts. “I would be against reading any book from any era that says ‘abridged due to modern sensitivities’.”

Hanks shared these thoughts while promoting the release of his first novel “The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece.”

This is coming after publishers of classic works, including Roald Dahl’s, the author of the popular children’s classic “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” announced plans to rewrite books to suit our modern times.

Many prominent figures have contributed to this debate, either in support of “airbrushing” classics to suit the times or of leaving author’s works in its most original form. If you care to join, we’d love to hear your opinions on this.
