The film “Elf” is one of the best Christmas movies of all time. This year marks 19 years of the film which was released in November 2003.
The comic Christmas film which was starred by Will Ferrell (Buddy), and the late James Caan has been topping the charts as one of the most streamed, and downloaded movies every December.
Now despite how great the movie turned out to be, Will Ferrell revealed that he once nurtured the thought that the movie would be the end of his career.
Will Farrell — Why Will Thought “Elf” Would Ruin His Career
Back in 2018, the SNL alum revealed to fellow actor James Corden on the “Late Late Show” that he once thought playing Buddy the elf would be the end of his career.
The actor recalled that while filming he was seen walking all over New York in his green and yellow elf apparel by folks who recognized him.
“The first two weeks of shooting were kind of all the exteriors in New York. So, still kind of discovering what this movie’s gonna be and running around New York City in yellow tights,” said Will, “People recognizing me from Saturday Night Live going, ‘You OK? What’s going on?'”
Will said he thought to himself “This is either going to be a home run or people are going to go, ‘Whatever happened to you? Why did you do that one about the elf?'”
Last year, in 2021, Will re-told the story of his initial fear about “Elf” to “The Hollywood Reporter.” Will explained that after he was sighted running all over New York with his Elf costume he thought Hollywood will axe him.
In one of the productions he remembered telling himself” Boy, this could be the end.”
Well, nineteen years later, the movie is still a hit and Will’s career is still intact although, Will never got nominated for the role he played in the movie.
Will Ferrell — Richard Curtis Believes Will Ferrell Deserves To Receive An Oscar Nomination For Elf
While attending the Oscar Wilde Awards 2022, Richard Curtis voiced his opinion on how he thinks Will Ferrell deserves to be nominated for an Oscar Award for his role as Buddy the Elf.
The filmmaker said it made him very antsy when Will Ferrell didn’t get nominated for his role in Elf. He went ahead and said that, had Will Ferrell been nominated, he would have voted for him, because he was rooting for Will, but “he was never given the chance” to do so.
Curtis also took the liberty to express his disappointment over the fact that Peter Sellers was also not nominated for his role as Inspector Jacques Clouseau in The Pink Panther film series.
He went further to say: “I think it’s a real issue that comedy isn’t respected as much…but I do try and push for comedy performances whenever I can.”
He continued: “it’s the price you pay, as it were. Comedies tend to make a bit of money, and then you don’t get the prizes.”
