Will Smith Wins Best Actor At BET Awards Despite Ten Year Ban From Oscars

Will Smith Wins Best Actor At BET Awards Despite Ten Year Ban From OscarsThis is Will Smith’s first major win since the Oscars controversy when he slapped comedian Chris Rock over a joke he made about his wife’s bald head.

Due to the controversial moment, Will Smith was banned from attending the Academy Awards for the next ten years and he was forced to step down as a voting member of the committee.

Will Smith Takes Home Another Award For His Iconic Role In The Sports Drama “King Richard”

At Sunday’s BET Awards, the 53-year-old actor picked up the award for the best actor in a movie – for playing Richard Williams – three months after winning his very first Oscar for the same role. “King Richard” also won the 2022 best movie award.

However, he did not pick up the award in person, as he’s been keeping a low profile since his reaction at this year’s Oscars went viral.

The other actors nominated alongside Smith in the category (which also includes television performances) were Adrian Holmes and Jabari Banks for “Bel Air”, Anthony Anderson for “Black-ish”, Damson Idris for “Snowfall”, Denzel Washington for “The Tragedy of Macbeth”, Forest Whitaker for “Respect and Godfather of Harlem”, and Sterling K. Brown for “This Is Us”.

For playing Serena and Venus Williams’ father, Richard Williams, onscreen, the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” star has previously picked up several awards including BAFTA Award, Golden Globe, NAACP Image Award, SAG Award, Critics Choice Award and the Oscar.

The Oscar slap, nicknamed the “slap heard around the world”, made waves weeks after the March 27 event when it happened.

Celebrities were split up regarding who they would stand with, and while many criticized Rock for making a joke out of the so-delicate subject of alopecia, others slammed Smith for his reaction.

Jada Pinkett Smith Talks Oscars Slap

Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith, 50, addressed the incident on a recent episode of her Red Table Talk show, saying, “About Oscar night: My deepest hope is that these two intelligent, capable men have an opportunity to heal, talk this out and reconcile.

“With the state of the world today, we need ’em both, and we all actually need one another more than ever. Until then, Will and I are continuing to do what we have done for the last 28 years — and that’s [to] keep figuring out this thing called life together. Thank you for listening.”
