Will Smith’s Worst Time Happened Before Oscars Slap

Will Smith followers may assume that the actor’s worst period came after he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars. But Smith recently shared what caused him the most pain in his career. And he also revealed the lessons he learned from it.

Find out what Will described as his worst career failure. And learn about his path to a comeback. Get all the details below.

Will Smith – Recalls Biggest Career Failure

Looking back at his career highs and lows, Will Smith points to a specific film as his lowest point. And that happened years before Smith shocked everyone by slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. As a result of a certain movie’s flop, Smith views that as the “most painful failure” in his career, noted Far Out magazine.

And Will admitted that the criticism from his role in M. Night Shyamalan’s science fiction flick After Earth disappointed him personally and professionally. Because it got both bad reviews and a disheartening box office showing, Smith struggled to recover. As a result, the actor viewed that as “the most painful failure in my career.” And he shared that the controversial movie Wild Wild West proved “less painful than After Earth” for a single reason.

“Because my son [Jaden] was involved in After Earth,” noted Smith. “And I led him into it.” Because he values his role as a father, Will saw that as “excruciating.” However, the actor shared that he learned from that flop. And he revealed, “What I learned from that failure is how you win. I got reinvigorated after the failure of After Earth.”

Will Smith – Reveals How To Win Personally And Professionally

However, after that science fiction film flop, Smith took time away from movie-making. And he recalled how he “stopped working for a year and a half. I had to dive into why it was so important for me to have number-one movies. And I never would have looked at myself in that way,” he added.

But Will also discussed his personal background. And he recalled what happened as a teenager. “When I was fifteen, my girlfriend cheated on me,” noted Smith. “And I decided that if I was number one, no woman would ever cheat on me.”

As a result, Smith vowed to change. And he shared, “All I have to do is make sure that no one’s ever better than me, and I’ll have the love that my heart yearns for.” As a result of that promise, Will “never released that [feeling].” But he did progress “into a mature way of looking at the world and my artistry and love until the failure of After Earth.” And he realized he needed to “accept that it’s not a good source of creation.”

Will Smith – Treats Instagram To A Dad Joke

As to how those lessons impacted Smith after he slapped Rock at the Oscars? Will has sought to make his comeback in different ways. And on Instagram this week, the actor even entertained his followers with a dad joke.

“Shout out to @natgeo and @disneyplus for helping me get all the way to the South Pole to tell the ultimate #DadJoke,” wrote Smith in his caption. “And a once in a lifetime adventure too. Stay Tuned Y’all,” he added. And Will promised, “We got somethin’ cookin’!”
