Derek Hough Gets Emmy Nod For DWTS Choreography

“I thrive with momentum,” shared the Emmy winner. “It gives me more ideas, energy, inspiration and motivation. Everything feeds into each other; it amplifies. If you need something done, give it to somebody that’s busy.”

Hough received his 13th Emmy nomination for a dance routine to “Higher.” Performed live by singer Michael Bublé during season 31 of Dancing With the Stars,” the routine allowed Derek to show his skills in utilizing “different elements, styles and usage of the whole space.” But he also “played with different camera angles, making sure that things weren’t flat.”

Derek Hough Reflects On Dance Journey

And the performance marked “the first time I’ve danced with all the pros in seven years,” shared Hough. But he also reflected on the fact that he now has received the most Emmy nominations for choreography. “It makes me really reflect on my journey through dance, and how it’s the gift that keeps on giving,” he shared.

“Reflecting on my journey, it’s really wild to think about how scared and fearful I was to choreograph,” admitted Derek. However, he learned that “you can’t be grateful and fearful at the same time.” And so Hough seeks to stay focused on gratitude.

Meanwhile, Hough looks forward to his wedding. But he admitted, “The wedding — that’s a whole production in and of itself. It feels like we’re planning two tours, two shows!”

As for the upcoming season of DWTS, Hough plans to focus on memories of judge Len Goodman, who recently passed away. “Having the passing of our dear friend and colleague Len and just being there to honor him is definitely my focus.” But he also looks forward to the return of his sister Julianne to the cast.

After winning DWTS twice, Julianne appeared as a judge from 2014 to 2017. However, she will become the co-host for the next season with Alfonso Ribeiro. And Derek views his sister as “such an important part of the show. She was there from the early years and [became] the first double champ. She really set a standard early on,” he added.
