We can understand attempting to pair Nicole Walker (Arianne Zucker) and Rafe Hernandez (Galen Gering) when Eric Brady was off the canvas and the show wasn’t sure of Greg Vaughan’s status but by the time they knew Vaughan was returning, Nicole and Rafe had been chem tested enough to know this pairing just wasn’t working.

First, it revolved around a talking Teddy bear named Duke that they won at a carnival as if this should bond them forever. And they did bond, when Duke, the toy, was destroyed by a vengeful Ava Vitali (Tamara Braun), who was rightfully angry her best friend and her boyfriend were having an affair behind her back.

Second, they are not Jarlena. When John Black (Drake Hogestyn) and Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) had their conference room romp back in the 90s, they were a proven pair with chemistry who fans wanted to see together. Different era. Different couple. Some things are iconic and should never be tried again.

When Eric and Nicole finally wed in 2019, it was a culmination of decades and angst where fans knew they were always going to be endgame. They had been through the gamut to be together and although DAYS didn’t give them a blowout wedding reminiscent of the 1980s, they did have a sweet ceremony with friends and family around them and the normal Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) machinations at the end.

Then, it was over weeks later when Eric decided to go help a village in Africa on one of his humanitarian trips. And Nicole waited… and waited… and waited. And did something stupid by drunkenly falling into bed with Xander Cook of all people and her marriage was over by its first anniversary.

Now that Eric is back, those looking looks are still there and Nicole doesn’t ever look like she is longing for Rafe. This pairing isn’t working and Nicole would make a big mistake if she goes ahead and marries him.
