Popular Disney Channel Animated Show Is Officially Canceled

While the Disney Channel animated series The Ghost and Molly McGee was loved by its fans, it seems it wasn’t performing up to spec. The series’ co-creator, Bill Motz has now confirmed that the animated show is officially canceled.

Last summer, fans of The Ghost and Molly McGee were concerned about the show’s future, mainly due to the season 2 finale titled ominously The End. Moreover, there was no announcement of a third season, leaving fans totally upset about their favorite animated series.

Now, the series’ co-creator Bill Motz has officially announced that The Ghost and Molly McGee is canceled and there will be no further seasons. In a post on X/Twitter, Motz had revealed they were “deep in the writing of season 2 scripts” when the show first dropped in October 2021.

Fast forward to now, and Metz shared with Pop Culture, “The early indicators from our first drop on Disney+ were that the show was doing quite well, so wanting to keep production going, Disney decided to commission the writing of 10 Season 3 scripts in hopes of success,” adding:

Unfortunately, without the robust marketing support we had at launch, our second drop on Disney+ in December 21 did not perform as well. Even though our third drop improved, by early June 2022, it was decided that the show would not continue on a Season 3. It was pencils down.

Motz went on to explain that this broke their hearts, and not just for the crew of The Ghost and Molly McGee. It also broke the hearts of all the supporting teams at Disney TVA. Moreover, it also included the leadership who had invested “passion, time, and resources into bringing this show to life.”

Bill also shared that he and Bob always knew how they wanted the series to end. However, without more episodes, they wouldn’t have the chance to tell that story. Due to this, they asked for one more episode to wrap everything up. While this was a “huge request,” asking Disney to spend more resources on the show, somehow they made it happen.

Change of leadership of The Ghost and Molly McGee

When Bob Chapek left the show, Motz said he and Bob Iger revisited the season 3 decision. As the studio liked the show, they hoped that the season 2 performance would make it worthwhile to continue.

However, although season 2 did perform well, Motz said it needed to grow its viewership even more to merit additional episodes. Meanwhile, the final episode, The End was kept back until it became clear the series wasn’t performing.

The animated show follows the story of Molly McGee, a 13-year-old girl who befriends a grumpy ghost called Scratch, who haunts her new house.

The creators of the Disney show, The Ghost and Molly McGee were Bill Motz and Bob Roth. Moreover, the animated series starred Ashly Burch, Jordan Klepper, Dana Snyder, Sumalee Montano, Lara Jill Miller and Michaela Dietz.

After announcing the cancelation, Motz praised the cast and crew, telling his followers how proud they are of the series. He said the series was “everything we hoped it would be more,” adding how “immensely grateful” they were to Disney for believing in them and bringing the show to life.

Bill concluded by saying that the show exists at all is amazing to him, adding:

We hope our little show has brought you joy and that you always keep a little Molly McGee in your spirit as you ‘enhappify’ your family, friends, communities, and world.
