General Hospital spoilers tease that GH and As The World Turns Alumni Martin West has passed away at the age of 82 on December 31, 2019.

General Hospital Spoilers – Martin West Was Best Known To Soap Opera Fans As Dr. Phil Brewer

Martin West was probably the best known and remembered by longtime soap opera and General Hospital viewers as Dr. Phil Brewer, who appeared from 1967 through 1975. He was the husband of Nurse Jessie Brewer (Emily McLaughlin). Phil was a cardiologist, and a prominent one.

Jessie, several years his senior, had worked hard to put him through college and med school, but suffered emotionally because of his roving eye, many affairs, and alcoholism. Jessie lost two babies, the first due to miscarriage, the second one being conceived in an act of marital rape and born with a terminal heart ailment that Phil, although a famous cardiologist, could not correct. The two finally divorced, and Phil met his end at the hands of another nurse he angered, Augusta McLeod (Judith McConnell) who bludgeoned him to death with a geode.

GH Spoilers – Martin West Portrayed Don Hughes On As The World Turns After Leaving General Hospital

Martin portrayed Attorney Don Hughes on As The World Turns after leaving General Hospital, a role which he was in from 1976-1978. Fans of that defunct CBS soap opera, which was on the air for 54 years will recall him as the older brother of Dr. Bob Hughes (Don Hastings), whose real life brother, Bob Hastings ironically portrayed the police commissioner on General Hospital for many years.

One well remembered storyline was his quest to marry Ellen Lowell (Patricia Bruder) although he had many relationships and several marriages throughout the series. Like his General Hospital character, Phil Brewer, Martin’s character Don Hughes also liked the women sometimes to his discredit, although he was still alive at the end of the venerable soap opera’s run and had come back to Oakdale to attend his parents’ fiftieth wedding anniversary and his father’s funeral.

Martin West was the life partner of Ann Chernow. He is survived by three children, Jason Weixelbaum, Allie West, and Gabriel West along with his stepson, Paul Mend, and his sister, Gail Britt.
