According to gossip, Diana discovered GH during a visit to the U.S. and she became hooked like millions of hardcore fans around the world. It’s said that she fancied the infamous supercouple Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) and Laura Spencer (Genie Francis) and even found a way to watch the soap when she was back home in England.

You don’t have to be a GH fan to know that Luke and Laura’s wedding was a mega event, on par with any royal wedding! Their televised wedding garnered 30 million viewers, rivaling that of Diana and Charles’ ceremony.

When Geary spoke to Here & Now in 2015 he recalled a charming memory of the princess. “Princess Diana had been a fan of the show, and got bootlegged copies of General Hospital sent to her, because GH never ran in the U.K. And from her wedding she wrote a note to both Genie Francis, who played Laura, and I, and sent us both bottles of champagne from her wedding. It was a heady moment for both of us. Very amazing.”

Both Diana’s and Luke and Laura’s nuptials took place in 1981. The royal wedding occurred in July and GH’s Luke and Laura tied the knot in November.

Later, Francis told news host Katie Couric that she had no idea who sent her the champagne gift and nice note!

According to her, someone had to explain who “Lady Diana Spencer” was as she was very young and did not understand. Once she was clued in, the gift and gesture became one of Francis’ most favorite show memories.

That both weddings happened in 1981 wasn’t the only similarity between them. Francis was just 19 when her character married Luke, and Princess Diana turned 20 right before marrying Prince Charles. Both Francis and Diana were also caught quite off guard by their youthful celebrity.
