Following on from Great American Family’s merger with Pure Flix, the network is getting involved in mystery movies. Much like its competitor, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, The Abby Brooks Mysteries looks like becoming a film series. Read on to find out more about the new movie, its plot, its cast and a trailer.
Great American Family to release The Abby Brooks Mysteries
Just by its name, The Abby Brooks Mysteries, it looks like Great American Family is once again trying to up Hallmark. The mystery movie theme is much like those on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. This is the second original film since Great American Family merged with the faith-based streaming platform, Pure Fix.
The writer and star of the new movie, Ansley Gordon, spoke to CBN about her new project. She said she “pulled inspiration from Nancy Drew and from the characters of Only Murders in the Building. The star who plays Abby Brooks in the movie added:
I knew I wanted to create an ensemble cast that felt like a family and I wanted the world to feel really inclusive, that you would want to be a part of the town of Prescott.
Plot of the mystery movie
The story follows Abby Brooks (Gordon) a mystery podcaster and former journalist. At the time, she is coming to terms with the loss of her baby and a divorce. However, she finds herself engrossed in the mysterious death of her free-spirited neighbor and uses the Bible as clues to solve the small-town murder.
According to Gordon, many aspects of her character, including her faith and journey through a miscarriage, are based on her own experiences. The actor writes for Nicely Entertainment on a regular basis, and they contacted her. Gordon explained:
They came to me and said, ‘We have the potential to do a cozy mystery. Do you have any concepts?’ I sent them five. They sent over multiple to Pure Flix and Pure Flix picked two, and they were both mine. And I said, ‘OK, God, I guess I’m writing this movie!’
Gordon said she wrote the first draft of the script and put a lot of herself into it. She said a lot of the things Abby is struggling with were things that happened in her own life. These included “her miscarriage, her disconnect from her family, and feeling like they have the faith, they have something that she doesn’t.”
Gordon added that these are all things that happened in her own life, saying, “And so, when I was writing her, I didn’t realize I was writing so much of my personal story. But the end product, I was so happy with.”
Meanwhile, she said that she didn’t have to ask or audition for the movie; it just happened, adding, “So I genuinely feel like this is what I’m meant to be doing.”
Cast of The Abby Brooks Mysteries
According to the movie’s official IMDb page, besides Gordon (The Boyfriend Trap), the other main cast includes Bret Green (Ratched) as Matt MacAdams, Karen Abercrombie (War Room) as Ms. Marian Weston and Chris Lindsay (Burn Notice) as Theo.
Meanwhile, Brittany Goodwin (An Unlikely Angel) plays Cami, Brit Laree (Star Raiders: The Adventures of Saber Raine) is Sophia Brooks, Seal Dillingham (Walker: Independence) plays John Grey and Suzanne R. Neff (Paul’s Promise) plays Penny.
Moreover, Doug Waldo (Chasing Greene) plays Tom Brooks, Braxton Angle (Christmas with Felicity) is Ross, Jewel Christian (House) plays Hannah and Israel Alexander (The War Between) plays Zeke.
