Firefighter adoption story mirrors Hallmark hit movie
Recently, a news story of a Florida firefighter, adopting a baby left at his fire station during the holidays, caught the eye of Hallmark actor Andrew Walker. It must have been a feeling of déjà vu to read the story and compare it to his role in the comedy movie, Three Wise Men and a Baby.
Walker shared a screenshot of the Today Show story in his Instagram Stories on June 24, captioning it, “Hmmm, sounds familiar, @paulcampbellofficial @tyler_hynes #3wisemenandababy”
About Three Wise Men and a Baby
The Hallmark holiday movie, Three Wise Men and a Baby was a major hit and the most-watched cable movie of 2022. In the movie, Walker plays firefighter, Luke Brenner, who was working the overnight shift at his fire station during the holiday. Meanwhile, Luke finds a baby left in a car seat, with a note directed to him from the baby’s unidentified mother. The note read:
I had no one else to turn to. Please take care of Thomas for me. I’ll be back by Christmas, I promise.
Instead of taking the baby to child protective services, his mom, played by Margaret Colin, convinces Luke and his brothers (played by Paul Campbell and Tyler Hynes) to watch the baby for several days. Moreover, the comedy movie reveals the three brothers, bonding as they learn to care for the baby while falling in love with him along the way.
When the baby’s mother returns for Christmas, she reveals that Luke had been first on the scene when she was alone and in labor. In typical feel-good fashion, the couple fall in love and end up raising baby Thomas together.
Life imitates art
As first reported by WKMG-TV in Orlando, a similar storyline happened at the fire station in Ocala, Florida. That fire station has a Safe Haven Baby Box, a temperature-controlled box at a number of fire stations across the US. Meanwhile, the box is for desperate parents to anonymously leave their babies, no questions asked.
On January 2, at 2 am, an alarm went off at the Ocala fire station to announce that a baby had been left inside the box. Meanwhile, the firefighter who quickly responded discovered a baby girl wrapped in a pink blanket with a pink bottle left beside her.
The firefighter and his wife, who wish to remain anonymous for their family’s privacy, had been trying for a baby for a decade and instantly hoped that the abandoned baby could be theirs. Meanwhile, following the protocol outlined by The Today Show, the firefighter took the baby to the hospital. Moreover, he left a note with the baby, explaining what had happened and saying how much he and his wife would love to adopt the tiny girl.
Luckily, as the firefighter and his wife had previously completed all the paperwork necessary to become adoptive parents, they had the baby, now named Zoey, in their arms two days later. Since that time, they have officially adopted her.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes founder, Monica Kelsey, spoke at a press conference in January, addressing the mother who left Zoey at the fire station. It turns out she, herself, had been left at a fire station when she was small. Talking of the baby, Kelsey said:
Thank you for keeping your child safe. Thank you for bringing your child to a place that you knew was going to take care of this child. And thank you for doing what you felt was best.
Three Wise Men and a Baby fans want more
Since the movie premiered, Hallmark fans have been pleading for a sequel to the hit movie. Currently, there is no official news out there about a sequel to Three Wise Men and a Baby. However, maybe now that Andrew has shared the touching viral story, the network might decide to release a sequel indeed.
