Jen Lilley is a musician, actress, and advocate for foster care and adoption. Recently, she announced her #VoicesThatGive competition. Despite COVID-19 pressing the “pause” button on life as we know it, she is using social media to raise awareness about an important issue. Plus, fans can win a role in one of her upcoming Hallmark movies.
U.S. Foster Care Statistics – Jen Lilley Advocates
According to the Children’s Bureau, which is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2019 foster care and adoption statistics are pretty shocking. Just last year, nearly 700,000 children were served with 437,000 in the system as of September 30, 2019.
263,000 of those were children entering the system and 125,000 kids were waiting to be adopted. However, only 63,100 adoptions were completed. Now, compare that to the nearly 72,000 children whose parental rights were terminated in just 2019 alone.
#VoicesThatGive Contest
Lilley posted on her Instagram account that she was partnering with Project Orphans to raise awareness with a contest. The grand prize is $10,000 and one lucky person will also get the chance of getting a walk-on role in one of Lilley’s upcoming Hallmark movies. Speaking to Metro, the actress talked about America’s “dirty little secret.”
“It’s a great way to raise awareness. When there is an issue nobody knows about, you shine some light on it and bring it to the light. That happens just by talking about it. And if it’s just an awareness campaign, then then we’ve done a great thing, but if we raise all the funds then that’s even more amazing… Here in the States, foster care and child abuse is like a dirty little secret. So we’ve brought it to the forefront, but in a positive way.”
