Hallmark Channel’s The Way Home spoilers and updates tease Kat Landry (Chyler Leigh) is going on a new adventure, this time to the midst of the roaring twenties!

This time she’s on a mind-bending journey along with her new best friend, a young Fern Landry (Bianca Melchior).

Fern and Kat Search For Elliot’s Mother Tessa

The Way Home is entering a new decade, and this one brings a significant shift for Kat. Her time-traveling escapades have previously involved the hardships of the 1800s and the sorrow of her father’s passing in the ’90s.

However, this Sunday’s episode marks a change as Kat travels to 1925 to search for Elliot’s (Evan Williams) mother, Tessa Cooper (Kelsey Falconer).

Co-showrunner Heather Conkie mentioned that it was ‘time for Kat to enjoy herself instead of facing danger,’ during a virtual Television Critics Association panel.

‘We decided to give her a little vacation, allowing her to wear beautiful outfits and spend time with a character who is vibrant and delightful, becoming another close friend for her.

Kat’s New Friend Is The Young Fern Landry

It was a refreshing shift from the gloom to something light and cheerful.’ Kat’s new friend is the lively Fern Landry (Bianca Melchior), who introduces the time traveler to the exciting 1920s. ‘I had an amazing time in that era,’ says star/executive producer Chyler Leigh to Soaps.com.

‘Every actor and performer we brought in blended perfectly with the show, fulfilling a desire I didn’t even realize I had.’ Leigh is particularly taken with her new co-star, who continues the trend of perfectly cast younger actors in the show.

“What really excited me is Bianca Melchior,” Leigh exclaims; “For her to portray young Fern, wow, that woman is incredibly talented! She’s a fantastic dancer, singer, and actress.”

Chyler Continued To Enthuse About Melchior

Besides being a triple threat, Melchior’s role is crucial to the overall story, connecting all the elements.

“Watching her bring Fern to life, and knowing this is where she began,” Leigh explains, “and then we have Jill Frappier as grandma Fern, seeing that and understanding what that origin was, and how she could end up here is mind-blowing. I can’t wait for everyone to see it because it’s so stunning, and that time period is so beautiful and glamorous, yet still has an element of danger and mystery.”

Although there are challenges in the ’20s- where would the drama be without them?- Leigh agrees with Conkie about the fun aspect of this time-travel experience. “I love that Kat gets to enjoy herself while she’s there, even while in detective mode,” Leigh adds; The Way Home airs Sundays at 9/8c on The Hallmark Channel.
