Would Chesapeake Shores Alum Jessie Metcalfe Consider Returning to Hallmark?

Would Chesapeake Shores Alum Jessie Metcalfe Consider Returning to Hallmark?Chesapeake Shores fans were shocked in April 2021, when Jesse Metcalfe said he was leaving the Hallmark series. While he did star in a couple of episodes of season 5, his character left town, ending Trace Riley’s on-again, off-again relationship with Abby (Meghan Ory). Ever since then, his fans have wondered if there is any chance he would return to Chesapeake Shores to pick up his relationship with Abby.

Would Jesse Metcalfe return to Hallmark Channel?

The big question for fans is whether Jesse Metcalfe would consider returning to the Hallmark Channel. It turns out he was asked just that question in a recent interview.

Jesse recently starred in the GAC Family movie, Harmony From the Heart and was interviewed by The List about the possibility of him returning to Hallmark. He said there is one situation that would make him consider returning to Chesapeake Shores. That one situation would be if Trace and Abby got back together again. “I think that’s the scenario that makes the most sense,” he said.

Is that likely to happen? Probably not. Jesse noted that the series, which hasn’t yet been renewed for a sixth season, has already started moving on from the Trace and Abby relationship. This, despite the fact that the relationship was such a major focus since Chesapeake Shores premiered in 2016.

Metcalfe added that Abby now has a new love interest on the show. In fact, he said she has “gotten the opportunity to take her storyline and her character in a completely different direction.” Jesse added, “And I certainly hope that she’s enjoyed that.”

Chesapeake Shores has a new showrunner

Metcalfe also noted that Chesapeake Shores has a new showrunner, Phoef Sutton, in season 5. He said that maybe the producers behind the show were “starting to find it challenging, figuring out really where they wanted to take these characters.” He added that this is even while there is a strong desire by the audience to ultimately see them end up together.

Why did Jesse Metcalfe leave the show?

Jesse last appeared in Chesapeake Shores in August 2021. Following that last episode, ET interviewed him and his choice to leave the show.

Jesse did say it was an “amazing journey” starring in Chesapeake Shores and he is “so thankful to Hallmark for the opportunity.” He admitted that he was “very creatively fulfilled for four seasons” of the show.

Despite this, he did say he felt he had reached the limits to how he portrayed the role of Trace. Besides this, there were some challenges with those behind the scenes.

“I just felt that there wasn’t really anything else I could do with the character, and we did go through three showrunners in five seasons on the show,” he said. He added that getting to know a new showrunner and forming a working relationship with a new person wasn’t something he necessarily wanted to do. Jesse said it felt like it was “time to turn the page and start the next chapter of my career.”

Despite this, Jesse did point out that Trace didn’t actually die, so it’s not the end for that character. Metcalfe said it was possible that he could return to Chesapeake Shores.

What does Phoef Sutton have to say about the situation?

At the same time in August, ET also spoke with Sutton about Jesse’s leaving and he said the actor’s choice to leave the show came fairly late in the day. He added that the team just nodded and got on with their work, leading to the introduction of Abby’s new love interest, Evan Kincaid, the eccentric billionaire. However, he did note that the door is always open for Trace to come back to town.

“Absolutely, he could come back,” Sutton said. “There’s no reason he couldn’t.”
