It appeared as though only four pairings remained a few weeks ago, but a surprise tease has the fifth couple reconsidering marriage.

The most recent episode had the show’s seemingly happiest couple, Jessica Studer and Austin Hurd, upside down. Brandon Reid was a no-show for this episode, leaving Taylor Dunklin on her own, but still hopeful that everything would work out.

This work issue has surprisingly become a potential sticking point between the couple that seemed most likely to breeze through decision day. Austin believes Jessica is transferring the feelings she has for her twin to him, in wanting to always be together. Jessica insists that Austin’s reaction disrespects her. The fact that he didn’t kiss her goodbye, as they and the other couples split two days before decision day, was also disconcerting.

As viewers recall, Brandon left the couple’s retreat and seemed to openly imply that he was done with Taylor. Her mixed reaction is telling, as she wants to keep their marriage going, but has said that he’s impulsive, unpredictable, stubborn, petty, and set in his ways.

Derek and Katie had a full discussion while they were out to dinner. This couple shared their inner feelings between bites.

It recently seemed that this pairing might be incompatible. But Katie’s honest admission about her moods and Derek’s statement that he’s nervous, but believes they have something special, is encouraging. Katie, in particular, says that she’s found more clarity and is torn between being hopeful and realistic. That conclusion resulted later in the episode after Derek was asked to be emotionally naked before they went to sleep.

Meka asked Michael to grade himself during their marriage to-date. He volunteered a C plus, with Meka giving herself a B.

Michael’s admission that he cared about Meka and wanted to make their marriage work was significant. He wants a future beyond decision day. Meka has rightly claimed that she’s been carrying a nearly full load for the entirety of their marriage. However, she feels that Michael has finally stepped up, which offers her hope.

Arguably the greatest tease came at the end of this episode, as Mindy was shown aside from Michael saying that her decision to separate from him wasn’t good for her!
