Disney CEO Bob Iger just revealed which Disney+ shows could become box office films at some point. After his company decided to put a halt on Star Wars movies until 2022, Iger says that television will become a major component of the Star Wars franchise through animated and live-action original programs. This comes as no surprise after the success of The Mandalorian, which just wrapped up its first season. Disney plans to become more “agnostic” with its platform, says Iger. He revealed that some of the television shows could become movies.
“Yes. I don’t look at it as just television, I look at it as an extension of Star Wars storytelling,” Iger revealed during his appearance on The Star Wars Show. “What Disney+ has given us the ability to do is to do just that, is to bring Star Wars to people in new ways, and to bring new Star Wars to people.” Iger said that it’s not going to be a rehash of the same characters or places. He likes doing a fresh take on a tale as old as time. He wants to follow the formula of The Mandalorian.
The Jon Favreau-created series introduced the world to a breakout star: Baby Yoda. Other fan favorites include bounty hunter (Pedro Pascal), former Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune (Gina Carano), bounty hunter guild head Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) and Ugnaught Kuiil (Nick Nolte). Since the Star Wars franchise has such as a large library of characters, Disney+ shows can turn into feature films, says Iger. “I love the ability to be really agnostic in terms of what platform it’s being made for,” Iger said. “And so it could be, down the road, that a TV show becomes a movie and a movie becomes a TV series. I’m not making any announcements here or not, but I think it’s important for us to be agnostic.”

However, back in 2018, Iger admitted that the previous timing decisions for the Star Wars films were a “mistake.” In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said the Star Wars releases were “a little too much, too fast” and that his company will be “a little more careful about volume and timing” in the future. Disney+ is currently developing a Rogue Ones spinoff series that’s centered around Diego Luna’s character Cassian Andor as well as an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor as an exiled Jedi.
