People are never going to stop wanting any movie or TV show that has a bearing to J.R.R Tolkien’s ‘Lord of the Rings,’ are they? And luckily for us, Ian McKellen is still here to bring our favorite wizard to life. But can they meet his terms for the prequel?
Ian McKellen Says He’s Ready To Play Gandalf, But On One Condition
“Speed it up people, Gandalf may be a wizard but he ain’t getting any younger” – at least that’s the message I think McKellen‘s trying to pass on after confirming his return to the iconic, mysterious and magical world of Middle Earth.
In a new interview with The Big Issue on the upcoming ‘Lord of the Rings’ Prequel, ‘The Hunt For Gollum,’ McKellen, who is currently in recovery after falling off a stage during a performance in London’s West End, revealed that the producers “hope that I’ll be playing [Gandalf].”
He said, “Enthusiasm for The Lord of the Rings shows no sign of abating … I’ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I’ll be playing him.”
The catch is that at 85, McKellen is no longer at liberty to say whether he’ll be available for a particular role or not. At the moment, the new franchise is in its early stages, but McKellen is suggesting producers and everyone involved move things along quickly if they’re really keen on having him for the part.
“When? I don’t know. What the script is? It’s not written yet. So, they better be quick,” he said.
All We Know About ‘The Hunt For Gollum’
Apart from McKellen returning as Gandalf, Andy Serkis will be reprising his role as Gollum. There are hints more original stars will be returning: I vote Orlando Bloom to return as Legolas and Cate Blanchett for Galadriel. What’s the name of the star that played Bilbo in ‘The Hobbit?’ I want him back too.
So far, ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ movie trilogies director Peter Jackson has been confirmed to be producing ‘The Hunt for Gollum.’
“The Hunt for Gollum is a work-in-progress title. It may not end up being called that. It’s going to very much be the world of Middle Earth according to Gollum’s experience of it,” Serkis said. “It is so early… But I will say that it will be a deep dive where we investigate Gollum’s character. There may be characters that we recognize that might be coming back. I’m not going to say who.”
Other returning OGs include Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, the co-writers of the original LOTR Trilogy.
