The jokes keep writing themselves when it comes to the sequel to Joaquin Phoenix‘s ‘Joker.’ Yes, the first movie might have found itself a cush and easy audience when it landed a few years back, but those same people are now keen to erase its follow-up ‘Folie à Deux’ from their minds.
One fan said viewers kept leaving the theater in droves with each musical number the movie made. With all the mighty promises that the film came with – and not to add the literal side attraction of having Lady Gaga play Harley Quinn – fans were far from being pleased.
Joaquin Phoenix – And Todd Philips Originally Did Not Want To Make A Sequel To ‘Joker’
The Joker is one comic book character that has continued to thrill audiences for generations. However, the comic book villain seems to have lost his punchline now that its sequel has rolled in.
Dancing, lights, and a Broadway show might be the last thing fans would associate with the joker, but that was sadly what they got.
Should we blame Phoenix or Phillips? According to The Hollywood Reporter, neither was keen on making a follow-up to the successful project in the first place.
They were much more comfortable putting on a Broadway show instead. It took some time but they finally started coming to terms with the idea to grace the Joker’s massive audience with a sequel.
The first order of business was finding a Harley Quinn to match Phoenix’s brand of Joker. This they did in the way of global superstar Lady Gaga, who, if you’re feeling like it, is also known as Mama Monster. Her artistry, branding and style already feels like something Quinn would do were she a musician instead of a psychiatrist-turned-villain. So I do see the appeal there.
After putting up $12 million to get Gaga to sign the papers, all that was needed to replicate the first film’s success – and perhaps show off ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ – was a good script. The idea for the script, according to a source speaking to THR, came to Phoenix in a dream.
