“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” Smashes Records

Surely you must have heard of the favorite video game character that finally got its very own animated movie and took the world by storm. Well, that little video game character’s movie has now soared over a billion dollars in global box office sales to become the highest grossing animated movie since 2019.

The Super Mario Bros – All The Records “The Super Marios Bros. Movie” Has Smashed Since Its Release

Like Super Mario smashes stuff in Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Peach from the evil turtle Bowser, its movie keeps crushing records set by its competitors.

Per a report released by NBCUniversal, the video game adaptation has soared into the top ten animated film in history, claiming the 10th spot. It is now the 10th biggest animated film of all-time, overtaking “Despicable Me 2” and “Minions: The Rise Of Gru” in the global market.

But its achievements did not stop there, as it absolutely smashed the global, domestic and international box offices, and all this within 26 days after it was released. It effectively became the animated movie with the biggest opening week when it earned $377 million in global ticket sales in its first week.

Wait, sit back down, I’m not done listing the records currently held by the animated movie. “The Super Marios Bros. Movie” is now Universal Studios’ seventh-biggest film ever, and has earned its place as the No. 1 animated film and the fourth-biggest film since 2019 in terms of global box office numbers.

The Super Mario Bros – What Jack Black Said About “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” Being Exciting

Even though Jack Black recorded his part of evil turtle Bowser entirely over Zoom, it didn’t make working on the project any less exciting.

“I feel like we really did it. I think we mission-accomplished it. We wanted to make a funny, exciting, action-adventure, and by God, we did it,” Black, 53, told PEOPLE at the film’s Los Angeles premiere in April. “And you know what else we did? We also used all the characters from the Nintendo universe.”

He continued, “If you like playing Mario Kart or any of those Nintendo video games, when you see this movie, you’re going to go, ‘Whoa,’ because there’s a bunch of little Easter eggs that only the gamers will really recognize and really appreciate. I’m really happy about that.”
