The Weeknd Defends ‘The Idol’ Amid Sex Scene Backlash

Yes, it’s just as bad as it sounds, but it looks like at least there’s one person who is willing to defend it. After a lot of people panned the sex scene between The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp’s character in the critically panned Max drama ‘The Idol,’ the chart topper came to the show’s defense.

While he admits that his character Tedros is a loser, he doesn’t think that the scene is as bad as some people are making it out to be. Here’s what you need to know.

The Weeknd – Defends ‘The Idol’ Amid Sex Scene Backlash

Despite critics calling it despicable and perhaps one of the worst scenes in television history, The Weeknd told GQ that while everyone is free to express how they feel about it, he’s just happy that it’s managed to stir so many emotions from so many different people.

The Weeknd put it this way, “There’s nothing sexy about it. However you’re feeling watching that scene, whether it’s discomfort, or you feel gross, or you feel embarrassed for the characters. It’s all those emotions adding up to: this guy is in way over his head, this situation is one where he is not supposed to be here.”

In the scene, Tedros tells Lily-Rose’s character Jocelyn to do some rather uncomfortable things which a lot of people have described as nothing shorter than degrading. But according to The Weeknd, his character is acting the way he is simply because he’s hit the jackpot. Somehow, he can’t believe that he’s actually there with the pop star to begin with.

Is ‘The Idol’ Really That Bad? Critics Say Yes

The Weeknd said, “You look at him, and this is a score — Jocelyn might be the biggest score he’s ever had. It’s very obvious. He’s over-indulging, he walks into this house looking around like, ‘Goddamn, am I way over my head? This can be the biggest job I’ve ever done,’” but also adds that Tedros does “come off like such a loser.”

He continued, “He’s despicable, a psychopath — why sugarcoat it? There’s nothing really mysterious or hypnotizing about him. And we did that on purpose with his look, his outfits, his hair — the guy’s a douchebag.”
