Little Mermaid – Star Halle Bailey Makes Movie Magic With Ariel Role
When Disney first unveiled plans for a live-action version of The Little Mermaid, fans of the movie immediately got excited. However, that first announcement took place in 2016. And Disney didn’t make the decision to cast Halle Bailey for the lead role until a few years later. But the COVID pandemic caused filming the live-action movie to get delayed, noted Pop Sugar.
However, Disney finally began filming in 2021, wrapping the movie in July. And this month, the first trailer for The Little Mermaid finally got released. Highlights range from Ariel going under the sea to the singer crooning parts of the song. And Bailey has shared her feelings about becoming “Part of Your World.”
“I want the little girl in me and the little girls just like me who are watching to know that they’re special, and that they should be a princess in every single way,” emphasized the singer and actress. And she urged young viewers to recognize that “there’s no reason that they shouldn’t be. That reassurance was something that I needed.”
Twitter Can’t Stop Gushing About Halle Bailey In The Little Mermaid
Because Halle faced racist remarks after her casting, she also earned praise from social media fans for sharing her feelings. And she expressed appreciation to her grandparents, who also suffered racism and discrimination. “It was an inspiring and beautiful thing to hear their words of encouragement,” revealed The Little Mermaid star. And she revealed that her grandparents told her, “You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little Black and brown girls who are going to see themselves in you.”
And some Twitter fans shared their feelings about the casting. For instance, one fan wrote, “My generation had Brandy as Cinderella. This generation has Halle as The Little Mermaid. Black girls just do it better. #TheLittleMermaid.”
But in one weird twist, some Twitter fans went overboard in supporting Halle. And they threw shade at previous stars in their effort to fan-girl over Bailey. That resulted in some slams for Jodi Benson in the Twitter posts comparing the two stars.
However, others just wanted to praise Halle’s acting talents and voice. For instance, one fan gushed, “Singers sing songs and songs should be sung by singers.” And another confessed, “I just watched that trailer about 50 times. I want my life back!”
