Warner Bros. is reportedly interested in doing a sequel of the 1994 film, The Mask. It was one of the hottest comic book adaptations of its time. It also catapulted Jim Carrey’s acting career. Since Marvel movies weren’t even heard of yet, it was one of the first zany films of its kind. Now that superhero movies dominate the box office, the franchise could be rebooted in a new way.
According to a report via We Got This Covered, Warner Bros. is looking to redo the Dark Horse Comics hero in a new box office flick. This is coming from the same source who confirmed that Bill Murray would return to Ghostbusters 3 and that another Scream movie is in the works. The insider revealed that Carrey would reprise his role as Stanley Ipkiss, an ordinary man who becomes a real-life cartoon the moment he puts on the Norse mask. Carrey has not been approached for the role, but the studio is interested in having the actor star in the film again.
Over the summer, co-creator Mike Richardson teased that he was working on a reboot that would follow the darker style of comics, but with a female comedian as the lead. Both the Carrey-starring sequel and female-lead reboot could be two different projects. The studio is definitely on board with the idea of bringing back Carrey. It also seems like their focus is more on The Mask reboot. Warner Bros. wants to expand The Mask franchise but keeping all of their options open. Both of these projects are currently in the development stage.

The studio will decide which project they want to focus all their time and attention on. Hopefully, this new film will make fans forget about 2005’s Son of the Mask, which was a massive flop. But both films could help spawn a new series of movies. What are your thoughts on The Mask sequel? Are you interested in Carrey returning to the classic film? Sound off below in the comments section.
