Neighbours to explore transphobia storyline as the true past of Mackenzie Hargreaves is made public.
As we recently reported, Neighbours has introduced its first ever transgender character. The introduction of Mackenzie provides the opportunity for the show to tackle the problem of transphobia in the coming weeks, as Yashvi makes an ignorant comment at Mackenzie’s expense.
The friendship between Yashvi and Mackenzie got off to a bumpy start when Yashvi mistakenly believed that Mackenzie was her fathers’ love child. After the mistake was sorted out, and the truth was revealed, the two began to build a friendship.
When the two of them candidly discuss trans issues at school, someone overhears them talking. The girls initially believe it was Harlow that overheard them and began gossiping, but it is soon revealed to school bully Richie.
Desperate to defend her friend, Yashvi confronts Richie, telling him to keep his mouth shut – he shouldn’t care that Mackenzie “used to be a boy.” Though the comment was said in good faith, Yashvi is unaware that the comment is not only false but also very offensive and hurtful.

The argument between Yashvi and Richie quickly escalates, and the forming crowd leaves Mackenzie horrified. Not only has she been outed to the whole school, but her friend has proven that she doesn’t understand who she is at all.
The two of them eventually make up, but that doesn’t mean that Mackenzie feels any better. She’s still deeply hurt by the transphobic comment, even though it was meant with no harm. Things get even worse when the parents start calling into the school to discuss their concerns about Mackenzie being a student there. This disgusting campaign is led by no other than Angela Lane, who not long ago made homophobic comments about Elly, trying to have her dismissed.
Will things get better for Mackenzie?
