Erik And Lyle Share Their Side Of The Story In The ‘Menendez Brothers’ Documentary

Lyle and Erik Menendez have garnered public attention for their public statements regarding the circumstances leading up to their parents’ 1989 murders for over 30 years. The brothers, currently serving life sentences, assert that a significant portion of their narrative is still untold.

Netflix – More Details On The Netflix Documentary

In the Netflix documentary The Menendez Brothers—released on October 7—Lyle and Erik share their perspective on the shocking events and the trials that followed.

Recorded interviews from prison provide new insights as they reflect on their case. One of the interviewees in the documentary notes, “It was like an incredible soap opera,” emphasizing the wealth and privilege surrounding the case, which culminated in the tragic deaths of businessman José Menendez and his wife, Kitty.

The documentary also highlights a growing TikTok movement advocating for the brothers’ release, casting the case in a new light.

The documentary’s trailer follows the release of ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,’ a fictionalized retelling of the brothers’ lives, produced by Ryan Murphy.

However, Erik expressed disappointment with the show, stating, “I believed we had moved beyond the lies and ruinous character portrayals of Lyle, creating a caricature of Lyle rooted in horrible and blatant lies rampant in the show,” the statement reads. “I can only believe they were done so on purpose. It is with a heavy heart that I say I believe Ryan Murphy cannot be this naive and inaccurate about the facts of our lives so as to do this without bad intent.”

Murphy’s series, part of Netflix’s true-crime anthology ‘Monsters’, has sparked renewed attention on the Menendez brothers, but not without criticism. Erik describes the portrayal as “vile and appalling,” while Murphy suggests that the brothers should be grateful for the resurgence in attention.

Public Outcry And Legal Efforts

Thirty-five years after the crime, the Menendez brothers are again captivating the public’s attention, largely due to a renewed focus on their claims of abuse.

In their 1993 trial, prosecutors argued that Lyle and Erik murdered their parents for a $14 million inheritance. However, the brothers have consistently maintained that years of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse, primarily by their father, drove them to commit the crime.

Lyle testified that his father’s abuse stopped when he was eight, but Erik’s claims extended until the time of the murders. Their mother, Kitty, was allegedly aware of the abuse but did nothing to intervene.

Public figures such as Kim Kardashian have amplified the brothers’ case, recently calling for a review of their life sentences. Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón also confirmed that new evidence presented by the brothers’ attorneys is under review.

This evidence, which includes a letter allegedly written by one of the brothers describing the abuse, may lead to a hearing scheduled for November 29.
