Netflix has officially released the full length trailer of the coming movie, Operation Varsity Blues: the College Admissions Scandal, which is coming out on March 17. It will be the first documentary that will offer an in-depth look into the infamous scheme led by Rick Singer.
College Admissions Bribery Scandal
The Netflix documentary is based on the 2019 scandal that arose over a criminal conspiracy that was put in place to influence undergraduate admissions at several top American universities. The investigation and related charges were made public on March 12, 2019, by United States Federal prosecutors.
At least 53 people were charged for their participation in the conspiracy. A number of them pleaded guilty or agreed to plead guilty. Thirty-three parents of college applicants were accused of having paid more than $25 million between 2012 and 2018 to William Rick Singer, who acts as the main brain of the operation. Rick Singer was found to be using part of the money he made from those parents to fraudulently inflate entrance exam scores and bribe college officials.
Key Worldwide Foundation and The Edge College and Career Network (also known as “The Key”) was controlled by Singer who used them in executing his plans. He pleaded guilty and cooperated with the FBI in gathering various evidence that will incriminate his co-conspirators. He revealed that he had facilitated college admission for children in more than 750 families. He currently faces up to 65 years in prison, and a fine of $1.25 million.
The investigation’s name, Operation Varsity Blues comes from a 1999 film bearing the same name. The case is deemed the largest of its kind to be prosecuted by the US Justice Department.
What Netflix Offers The Story
Netflix took up the making of an original documentary that will detail the 2019 investigation surrounding the huge criminal conspiracy. Chris Smith, who directed the Fyre Festival documentary, is directing the movie. The name of the documentary is taken from the name given to the 2019 investigation process, which was also taken from the name of a 1999 movie.
The documentary was made to give people an in-depth look into the methods used by Rick Singer and how those methods have worked for him for years. The portrayal and role of Singer is based on FBI wiretaps. It will likely push in deeper than the headlines to bring the real story to people, which is the vision for the documentary.
“All my friends are only talking about one thing and it is this story,” was the beginning words of the trailer.

“We help the wealthiest families in the US get their kids into school,” a conversation by Rick Singer, which is said to be a ‘real conversation’, plays over the phone.
“It truly is amazing what people will say on the phone when they don’t know the Feds are listening,” a commentator on the documentary further says.
Netflix is promising to bring the real story, with the real conversations to people, so that the truth behind the lies would be unearthed.
Following the fact that very successful business-people and famous celebrities are involved in the conspiracy, with the release of an exciting trailer that will make people want to get a glimpse of what made the story that became a major headline, I’d say March 17 can’t come faster for a lot of people.
As they said in the Netflix trailer, “In America, we love the wealthy and we hate the wealthy. They disgust us and they fascinate us.”
