Vladimir Putin – Russian President Claims “Cancel Culture” Is Bearing Down On Russian Artists
The author, sometimes known as Robert Galbraith, called out the Russian leader for referencing her in his “cancel culture” critique.
Mr. Putin compared the recent criticism of the popular children books “Harry Potter” to those faced by pro-war Russian composers and writers during a televised meeting on Friday.
In the lengthy speech, which was given to winners of various cultural prizes, President Putin claimed that Russian creatives were being discriminated against.
“They are trying to cancel a thousand-year-old country,” he said.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began last month, some events featuring pro-war Russians have been cancelled. Even events featuring music from dead Russian composers have been scraped.
In addition to these, Putin also alleged — without proof — that there was a “gradual discrimination against everything linked to Russia… in a number of Western countries”.
“They are banning Russian writers and books,” he continued. “The proverbial ‘cancel culture’ has become a cancellation of culture.”
He also defended J.K. Rowling, who is facing criticism in light of her trans views, although she strongly affirms that she’s not transphobia.
“JK Rowling was cancelled because she, a writer of books that have sold millions of copies around the world, didn’t please fans of so-called gender freedoms,” Mr. Putin claimed.
Per the famous children’s author, her interest in trans issues is coming from the fact that she suffered abuse at the hands of her first husband.
In turn, critics have slammed her for diminishing the identity of trans people.
J.K. Rowling – Fires Back At Russian President Vladimir Putin
In response to Putin defending her from critics, J.K. Rowling blasted him for “slaughtering civilians”.
“Critiques of Western cancel culture are possibly not best made by those currently slaughtering civilians for the crime of resistance, or who jail and poison their critics,” the Harry Potter author shared on Twitter.
The war, which is now entering its second month, has seen the displacement of over 10 million people from Ukraine.
