Are You My First? is a new show on Hulu and DisneyPlus, and this week, when the premiere date was announced, ABC fans vented about it. Why would they get so hot under the collar? Read on to find out.
Several Reasons For Irritation
Dating shows often find success, as seen with hits like 90 Day Fiancé and the Bachelor Nation franchise. However, a new show, Are You My First? is generating significant backlash. The premiere date and a very short synopsis were posted on Instagram on Monday night, leading to immediate strong reactions from viewers.
The post featured a photo of ABC’s Bachelor Nation stars Colton Underwood and Kaitlyn Bristowe. In the caption, the admin wrote:

Backlash was fast and furious, and there were several reasons for the outcry in the comments.
Why Were Folks So Unhappy?
Firstly, those who saw the post seemed outraged about Colton Underwood hosting. Not so much because he’s gay, married another guy, and now has a child. But, they remembered how badly he treated Cassie Randolph.
He’d chosen her as his winner of The Bachelor, and they lived together. However, things went sour, and he wouldn’t take the hint that it was over. Eventually, she filed for a restraining order. She claimed, among other things, that he “stalked her” and also placed a tracking device on her car.
Later, on Netflix, Colton admitted he made a mistake, and then talked about his sexuality. Meanwhile, plenty of people like Kaitlyn Bristowe. However, her failures when it comes to love seem hardly likely to qualify her to host couples falling in love.

Remember, she became engaged to Shawn Booth on The Bachelorette, but they split. And then, she took up with Jason Tartick. After their engagement, she later broke up with him as well.
There Are More Reasons – Fans React
The idea of virgins looking to lose their virginity didn’t appeal to those who felt that it was tacky. One person noted in the comments: “Remember when Disney+ wouldn’t let Hilary Duff film a more mature reboot of Lizzie McGuire for their platform and now they’re making shows like this?”
Another one opined, “Oh my god this sounds horrendous.” And other echoes the sentiment, with a critic saying, “I legit thought this was a late April Fools joke. Sometimes we need to just… not. Come on, Hulu.”
The Hosts Got The Most Critics
Most of the annoyance was aimed at Colton Underwood and Kaitlyn, although Colton got most of it. Incensed, a critic wrote, “Didn’t he put a tracker on his exes car, try to isolate her from her family and friends, literally hide in the alley outside her home…we didn’t forget.”
Here are a few more unhappy reactions:
- Colton?? Really?? Poor choice! Not interested in somebody who stalked their ex and tracked their vehicle leading to her needing a restraining order! Why are we still giving [him] a platform??
- Anyone who has stalked their ex, including placing hidden tracking devices on their car, should not be getting tv hosting jobs. there is no amount of time between secretly hiding a tracking device in your girlfriends car and a steady tv paycheck that makes that okay.
- I would never take any dating advice from these two. Is this a joke??
- [Kaitlyn will] do anything to have her face on TV. Time to move along…
- I cannot think of 2 less likable people.
What do you think? Does the subject matter about virginity offend you? Do you think Hulu could have done better when they chose the hosts? Lay it out in the comments below, and come back here often for all your reality TV news and updates.
Absolutely there are so many more hosts that would be well suited and well deserving! And the subject matter of the show is outrageous to me! It’s disgusting! I can tell you I will not be watching.
