Chip and Joanna Gaines, the HGTV stars behind the show Fixer Upper, are opening up about what it’s like managing their business together and being happily married for eighteen years. Working together with a spouse isn’t always easy for some, but these two have found a way to see eye to eye in their business, as well as in their private lives.
Chip and Joanna Gaines recently celebrated their eighteenth wedding anniversary, and in their exclusive interview with E! News, they happily shared all they’ve been through together to make it that far together.
Chip And Joanna Gaines’s Relationship Secrets
“It’s been quite the journey, quite the challenge, but I have muscled through it,” Chip Gaines jokingly said about his and wife Joanna’s milestone anniversary.
“You are a saint,” Joanna cheekily replied. It’s clear from the ease they talked and joked about each other that eighteen years haven’t weakened their love, but strengthened it instead.
Chip is spotting a long hair look, even waving it around and showing it off, and his wife admitted that it’s actually getting out of control. In defense, Chip said that his wife makes him “play all these roles,” and she quickly replied, “No, I don’t,” while Chip added, “it keeps things fresh.”
At one point, Joanna reminded Chip that “they’re recording this,” so he should probably keep his jokes to a minimum.
As for how the couple, who share five kids together and see each other a lot at work and at home, take breaks from each other, Chip didn’t waste time in affirming that even though it may sound a little sad, he needs “zero breaks from Jo.” But he later added that he lets Jo have a “girls’ trip”.
The couple also shared their secrets to being happily married in a 2017 interview with PEOPLE, “This is really not for everybody so don’t feel insecure or try to force something if it’s not,” Chip, 46, said. “When you decide to go for it, just really weigh on each other’s strengths and try not to cross over into each other’s lanes.”
“Just encourage one another’s strengths and not be so particular that you constantly butt heads over it,” he added at the time.
On the other hand, Joanna believes that having a mediator during tough times is crucial, “Get a mediator, get a designer… If you can’t figure it out, bring in someone that will help so you don’t end up ending your marriage,” she said. “And allow yourself room to make mistakes.”

As for what fans of Fixer Upper can expect from the reboot and the changes that will be made to the show, Joanna said that this time round, she and husband Chip are taking control of the scheduling.
