American Idol – Backlash Continues
In Season 21 of American Idol, Katy Perry received backlash for how she treated the contestants. Most viewers noticed that she was jealous of the female singers. She never responded to the criticism over her judging.
In February, Katy shocked fans when she announced she was leaving the show after Season 22. Katy shared that she wanted to go back to making music.
In a recent episode, fans were outraged with how Katy handled a contestant. Odell Bunton Jr quickly became a fan-favorite.
The Monday, April 1st episode was also the night of the Final Judgement, in which the judges selected the Final 24. Many of the viewers’ favorites were cut from the competition.
Odell was sent home, or Katy Perry made it seem that way. She told him that she had to deliver him “bad news.” Before that, she asked Odell about his upbringing.
“Man, it’s been tough. We got a total of 12 people living in a hotel room,” Odell shared. “Just two beds and a little kitchen area.”
He was overcome with emotion. But Odell pulled himself together and dried his eyes. He admitted to Katy that it’s been an “emotional day for him.” Katy suggested that his time was “up” on the show.
“You know, Odell, it’s a lot of pressure, having a platinum ticket,” Katy continued. “I don’t even know what the pressure is having 12 people under one roof. [But] we have to make decisions that are hard. Even when life is hard. Unfortunately, this is as far as we can take you.”
Odell looked shaken up once again. That’s when Katy Perry told him that he was safe this week. “It’s gonna be up to America from here on out because you’re in our Top 24,” she exclaimed. “Oh my God,” Odell said before bursting into tears.
Katy Perry – Called Out For Cruel Behavior
American Idol viewers took to X, formerly Twitter, to react to that scene. Most of them called out Katy Perry for being cruel to Odell. They didn’t like how the fakeout sent him on an emotional rollercoaster.
“Katy I hate you for that #Top24 #AmericanIdol,” one user posted.
“Katy!!!!! Why do you make us cry like this #AmericanIdol,” another user noted.
“That was not nice Katy,” a third user posted.
