Did Barbara Negatively Influence Jenelle Evans?

Teen Mom alum Jenelle Evans did not get along with her mom, Barbara Evans. MTV fans know that her daughter turned out to have a lot of drama and big problems with men, child-rearing, and drugs. So, people have questions about how her mother might have negatively affected her.

Teen Mom fans couldn’t help but notice that when Barbara Evans and her daughter had shouting matches, it was as often in front of young Jace. On Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, she vowed to get her mother out of her life permanently.

Jenelle Evans clearly hates her mom. Is that because she had a horrid childhood? Family can negatively influence kids, and raising kids is often learned from parents. Of course, many critics slam Jenelle for being a bad mom.

On Reddit this weekend, a Teen Mom fan wondered if Barbara Evans had been a bad mom. U/bebespeaks said that they had a lot of “questions,” which they did because the caption was so long. And, some of them were about Jenelle’s dad. 

Basically, the MTV fan wondered if Jenelle Evans was negatively influenced by her mom. In part, they wrote:

Was Barb a shitty mom to Jenelle in the 90s and 2000s? Did she do stupid things, bring in strange men…not ever ask Jenelle what she wanted for her birthdays or for dinner?…Where did Barb screw up in the parenting department during Jenelle’s childhood? So badly that she thought having sex at 14/15 was the solution to making herself feel better?…

MTV fans didn’t all agree that Jenelle Evans turned out the way she did because of her mom. But, a lot of them felt that perhaps Barbara was partly to blame. Here are some of their thoughts about it. 

• There were episodes when Barb was no saint! …Dr Drew asked [Barb if] Jenelle was loveable and she said no.
• It’s generational trauma, people like to take sides but forget that Jenelle was a literal child when this all started. Yes, she seemed like a handful but something had to cause that behavior. Maybe it wasn’t all Barb, but she definitely was a big reason.
• The way Barb speaks to Janelle is ruthless. She’s mentioned a few times that Janelle’s Dad was abusive and I’m sure Janelle saw some of that and then he was gone. Janelle has major Daddy issues and therefore seeks love from men constantly and can’t stay single. (sic)
