22-year-old transgender activist and reality star, Jazz Jennings, recently opened up about the hate she receives from people for being a transgender woman and loving it.
The TLC star, while shocked that there are people out there who want to hurt her for being unapologetically who she is, also said she’s learned to handle the death threats a lot better.
Jazz Jennings – Star Of “I Am Jazz” Opens Up About Being Called “An Abomination”
PEOPLE shared an exclusive first look at the upcoming season of “I Am Jazz”, which sees the Harvard student receiving death threats while attending school in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
“I get death threats almost on a daily basis,” Jennings shared with PEOPLE ahead of the Jan. 24 premiere of her TLC reality show. “People will comment on my photos saying, ‘Burn in hell. Kill yourself. You’re an abomination.'”
She continued, “But when someone sends a threat to where you live and they know your location, it’s a really, really scary feeling knowing that someone is kind of stalking you a little bit and they have these ill intentions.”
In the preview, we see an emotional Jazz telling her mom, “it just doesn’t stop.”
Jeanette assures her that “it’s okay”, even though she’s battling with her own fears about Jazz being at school and receiving death threats.
“This is exactly what we’ve been afraid of,” Jeanette said in the preview. “This is different. There’s a person out there that knows where she lives. I’m absolutely terrified because there’s no timeline on a death threat.”
Jazz Jennings – Opens Up About Feeling Safe In School: “I Feel Protected”
It’s not fun being on the receiving end of any insult, let alone a death threat. But since it’s become Jazz’s life, she has learned to navigate it.
“I do feel protected at school. I think they have my back and they’re going to handle any situation,” she said. “But it is really, really scary. And it’s sad that we live in a world where people want to kill others just for being who they are.”
The season preview shows Jazz leading fellow transgender activists across campus while they chant “we’ve got the power.”
The activism and death threats is not the only points that will be explored in this season of “I Am Jazz”. She will also get to go on a date for the first time in four years and do stuff like get a bikini wax for the first time.
“I Am Jazz” premieres on Jan. 24 at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.
