Reba McEntire didn’t know exactly what to expect when the country music singer agreed to become a coach on The Voice this season.
But as just Reba shared in a interview, she faced one key challenge and even learned a new skill!
Find out what the country music songstress admitted challenges her the most. And keep reading to learn what McEntire views as the most important lesson for The Voice contestants.
Reba McEntire – Loves Those Tater Tots!
The Voice season 24 features a major change in the form of newbie coach Reba McEntire.
And while Reba does her best against more experienced coaches John Legend, Niall Horan and Gwen Stefani, the country music singer told USA Today that she feels challenged sometimes.
However, the 68-year-old country singer’s sweet smile, tendency to use expressions known as “Reba-isms,” and fondness for the on-set tater tot cart can deceive. Because Reba already has shown a talent for connecting with the contestants. For instance, McEntire doesn’t hesitate to tell them that she felt “nervous” as well when starting out.
And The Voice will give Reba a chance to demonstrate what she knows about coaching when the Battles begin next week. But at first, Reba admitted that she struggled with an unexpected challenge.

Reba McEntire – Learned THIS Skill On The Voice!
And the country music singer shared that she had to learn a very specialized skill on The Voice. Because Reba’s “mentality at first in the Blind Auditions was to hit the button every time when I like somebody,” McEntire needed to learn to wait. However, she praised the other coaches for remaining “very patient with me, which I’m very grateful for.”
And the country music songstress gushed, “Everybody’s getting along great.” But Reba admitted to needing time to understand the process. And after watching McEntire repeatedly hit the button during the Blind auditions, she received coaching from producers Kyra Thompson and Audrey Morrissey.
“The producers kept coming over,” recalled Reba. “They said, ‘You don’t need to hit your button all the time. You’ve got to be selective’.” But McEntire didn’t want to delay. “I said, ‘I waited till four seconds (into the performance). I want this person! I’m going to get them’.”
Reba McEntire – Recalls Breaking Into Music Industry
However, while The Voice experience feels like “so much fun,” Reba also remembers her challenge as a new singer. And those memories help her empathize with the contestants. “It was hard,” she recalled. “And it was lonely.”
But the singer tries “not to bring that up. Because I do want to keep on the positive, happy side,” she added about starting out in the music industry. “But there are so many nights you’re calling home and everybody’s in the kitchen cooking dinner,” she recalled. “And you go lay back down in the bed there in the Holiday Inn and cry because you’re not there and you’re so homesick you can’t hardly stand it. But you’ve got your dream and you’re going forward.” And Reba hopes that through The Voice, she can help a young singer go forward just as she did.
