Keith asked for his divorce to be expedited after his wife and California “supermom” Sherri plead guilty to multiple counts of fraud. Papini admitted to faking her kidnapping in 2016 during a Zoom hearing on Monday. Papini further admitted that she spent time at the apartment of her ex-boyfriend, James Reyes in Costa Mesa and was not taken by two Hispanic women as she previously claimed. Sherri Papini – Appeared In Court

Papini cried as she admitted to faking her kidnapping six years ago but offered no further explanation for her actions. The criminal complaint, filed last month, listed Keith as her “then husband”. The couple shares two children, Tyler, 8, and Violet, 10. The couple was married in 2009. Papini limited her answers to “Yes, your honor” and “no, your honor” unless asked for an explanation. When the judge asked how Papini was feeling, she answered, “I feel very sad.” Authorities say the woman disappeared for 22 days before reappearing over 200 miles away from where she was last seen. Papini’s hoax has been compared to the main character in Gillian Flynn’s “Gone Girl.”

Was James Reyes An Accomplice?

Police say that Papini tricked her ex-husband into harboring her by claiming to be running her abusive husband. In addition to being charged with lying to the police, Papini is charged with fraudulently obtaining $30,000 from that state’s victim compensation board as well. Papini was facing up to 25 years in prison but the prosecutor recommend a lower sentence of an estimated 8 to 14 months in prison which is to be decided on July 11. Papini also agreed to pay $300,000 in restitution. This includes money spent to search for her in other states as well as the search for the two “Hispanic” women.

Papini apologized for the pain she caused her family during this ordeal. Papini’s attorney says he doesn’t believe she knows why she tried to pull off this elaborate scheme. The attorney claims that Papini has a long and complicated mental health history. Papini will also have to pay back $128,000 in disability payments as well as $49,000 to a GoFundMe account that was set up to help the family. Some believe this was Papini’s way to try to obtain fame and fortune through lies.
