Even if you aren’t a fan of the TLC reality TV series Sister Wives, you are likely familiar with the show and Kody Brown. The program has been a staple on the network’s lineup since 2010, and most people have heard of the practicing polygamist, and his four wives, Robyn Brown, Janelle Brown, Christine Brown, and Meri Brown.
The show got a ton of media attention when it was first released. During the Sister Wives premiere, audiences saw Kody marry his fourth wife Robyn Brown; however, as of season 18, he is no longer with Christine, Meri, or Janelle. Kody is a father to a total of 18 children.
Still, it’s hard not to notice that reality television success has brought a plethora of money Kody’s way. While he started with humble beginnings in 2010, the difference of being on television for so many years has brought on a very different change to his spending habits.
Sister Wives Spoilers – Kody Brown Once Dealt With Major Financial Issues
Before the premiere of Sister Wives, Kody’s life was very different. As per reports, his work history included a stint as the Das Hundhaus Firearms and Accessories President, working as a lumberjack, and was also a traveling salesman.
Still, while he (and his three wives) worked to earn a living, the family did have financial troubles before the show started. In 2015, Kody and Meri filed for bankruptcy, while Janelle did the same back in 1997. In fact, in 2010, Christine also filed for bankruptcy.
“Sister Wives” Spoilers – Brings Steady Stream Of Paychecks In For Kody Brown
While it’s unknown exactly how much Kody Brown makes per season, an E! News report from 2009 reveals that TLC families receive about ten percent of their show’s overall budget, which is approximately $25,000 to $40,000 an episode.
It’s important to note this report came out before Sister Wives started, so this might be a bit higher for the Brown family. In addition, Kody also does Cameos, where messages cost about $149 each.
There was a rumor buzzing in 2018 that TLC was about to cut the show because ratings were low; however, Kody was okay with taking a pay cut to stay on the air.
Contract negotiation details remain unknown, but with the steady stream of income that the show brings, Kody still can rely on his Sister Wives paycheck to make ends meet.
Sister Wives Spoilers – Kody Brown Loves Lavish & Expensive Jewelry
With the popularity and longevity of Sister Wives, Kody’s prior modest life is a thing of the past. In 2023 when Savanah Brown, Kody’s youngest daughter with Janelle, graduated from high school, her dad wore a David Yurman necklace to the event, which retails at about $1,000.
Reddit users were quick to note online that the piece resembled a “smaller version” of Titanic’s “Heart of the Ocean” necklace.
Meanwhile, Kody’s daughter with Christine, Gwendlyn commented on a YouTube video (recap of Season 17, Episode 14) that her dad and Robyn have “terrible” spending habits and they don’t live within their means.
Both Robyn and Kody have been seen wearing Rolexes on Sister Wives in the past. Mr. Brown was also seen in Season 18 wearing a David Yurman signet ring that costs approximately $1,000; Robyn seemingly has her own version of that ring, too.
Sister Wives Spoilers – Kody Brown Loves His Lavish Vacations & Shopping
During the show’s tenure, the Browns have taken some incredible vacations, visiting Alaska, Hawaii, and Massachusetts.
Does TLC foot the bill for this, or does Kody? It’s expensive to go anywhere these days, especially if you are traveling with five adults and 18 kids!
Still, the trips spotlighted on the show aren’t the only vacays happening for the Brown family. In 2023, Robyn and Kody went to Las Vegas and enjoyed some shopping.
According to reports, they stayed at Caesar’s Palace. In October of last year, Mykelti Brown, Kody and Christine’s daughter added speculation about Robyn’s spending habits when asked. She states a “shopping addiction” is probably “true”, and “definitely”.
Sister Wives Spoilers – Christmas Is Lavish In The Brown House (For Some Kids)
Christmas is a major spending event in many households across America, and the Browns are no exception. In Season 18, Kody gave his five kiddos with Robyn gas-powered motorbikes.
Still, as he’s no longer with his other wives, it seems that the rest of the kids didn’t get the same treatment during the holidays.
In fact, Savanah Brown told Christine and Janelle that she was “hurt” by how it all played out at Christmas, noting she was “sad and angry” at him for “no gifts, nothing”.
Still, was Kody simply overcompensating for the fact that the family wasn’t together? Robyn implied this during a show, stating he may have been compensating for what the family was “missing”.
Sister Wives Spoilers – Kody Brown’s Lavish Home With Robyn Brown
As per a Daily Mail report in 2019, Kody spent $900,000 on a huge house in Flagstaff, Arizona. It has five bedrooms, a four-car garage, a sprawling deck, and heated floors.
Standing at 4,400 square feet, the value of the home jumped to 1.9 million by the end of 2023, according to a U.S. Sun report.
When Kody was with all his wives, the Browns were originally all supposed to live in a compound, and Kody purchased five pieces of land when they left Vegas for Flagstone. He bought the land in 2018 for $820,000, named “Coyote Pass”, and is close to his new house with Robyn.
When his three other wives left him, he was going to divide the land up; however, this did not take place. This has caused a ton of drama, and adding fuel to the fire is the fact that construction cannot take place until the land is completely paid off.
In 2021, Janelle Brown stayed on her piece of “Coyote Pass” in an RV for some months, but the other wives have never lived on the property as of yet. As per an In Touch report, Kody still owes $5,000 in property taxes for the land.
