Real Housewives of Salt Lake City (RHOSLC) star Mary Cosby shared about the extremely sad loss of her son, Robert Cosby Jr. Of course, articles started popping up all over the place, and the news went viral. But what’s interesting is that many Bravo fans genuinely express their sadness over the way the 23-year-old’s life turned out. And, they also think the system failed him.
Three Weeks Since Leaving Prison
It’s only been about three weeks since Mary celebrated Robert Jr. returning home from prison. If you don’t know, Robert violated a protective order. Plus, he resisted arrest after causing damage to the car belonging to his in-laws.
Still, Mary seemed loving, supportive, and so happy that her boy was home. Well, she might not have seen his death coming at the time. Nevertheless, many fans could have predicted a sad end sooner or later. And the reason for that seems to be because addiction problems seem so devastating.

Right now, Real Housewives of Salt Lake City fans obviously feel very deeply for Mary Cosby. After all, losing a beloved child always seems devastating. Children aren’t meant to die before their parents. But sadly, this time, the Bravo star faces the terrible reality that they do.
A Heartbreaking Loss
According to reports from E! News and other outlets, the death of son of the famous pastor was confirmed. Law enforcement attended a call on Tuesday about a “full arrest/medical emergency” involving a young male.
Nobody could help Robert Jr. Cosby though, and his death was confirmed upon arrival; officials sadly confirmed he was deceased. This devastating loss comes just months after Robert’s arrest and about two years since he went into rehab.
Candid Conversations On Addiction
On RHOSLC, often fans heard Mary Cosby talk about her life and about Robert Jr. In fact, Season 5 became very candid as she discussed the substance abuse of her boy in detail. Well, as he confirmed, he almost became an addict. And yet,his mom also knew that there simply isn’t an “almost” with this social disease.
In Season 7, his mom spoke on Real Housewives of Salt Lake City about his arrest, and while she missed him terribly, she also noted, “I know he’s somewhere where he’s not using.” Sadly, she also noted, “you don’t want to see your kids suffer.”
Fans React – System Failed Him?
As the news spreads, Bravo fans mourn, and they feel terrible for Mary and Robert Cosby Sr. However, it also caused a lot of discussion about how the legal system handles addiction. Many Bravo fans feel that jail simply isn’t the right environment for those struggling with mental health and substance issues.
Actually, in the comments on E! News’ YouTube channel, a commenter summed it up. They said: “Looks like ‘taking a step back’ and incarceration actually accelerated his demise. Jail is ALMOST NEVER THE ANSWER FOR ADDICTS… They’re mentally sick and should be treated like a severe mental illness.”
Here are a few more responses from the discussion:
- Noooo I’m actually so sad about this. Poor Mary. He really needed intensive rehab and therapy.
- OMG I am completely in shock he certainly didn’t deserve that and I loved him on the show. I know he’s now in Heaven. R.I.P Robert. May God rest your beautiful Soul.
- We love you Mary. Addiction is the hardest demon to beat and may Robert Jr be at peace and watch over his mama.
- God Bless you Mary & your family. You brought us into his world in a scene between you and him last season on the show which was a wonderful moment and we all fell in hope he would find a positive road to healing. With love and respect, stay strong dear lady!!
Looking To The Future
The loss of Robert Jr. leaves a massive void in Mary’s life, as he was frequently the center of her world on and off-camera. As the RHOSLC community gathers to support her, many hope that the tragedy brings more awareness to the complexities of recovery and the need for better support systems for those battling addiction.
