Shannen Doherty, best known for her roles in ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ and ‘Charmed’ has died following a nine year battle with breast cancer. The sad news was confirmed in People Magazine and Daily Mail UK.
Shannen Doherty Was Only Fifty-Three Years Old
The world mourns the loss of the beloved actress Shannen Doherty, known for her roles in ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ and ‘Charmed’. After a courageous battle with cancer that began in 2015, she passed away at the age of 53. In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, Doherty’s publicist Leslie Sloane confirmed her passing on Sunday, July 14.
Surrounded by her family, friends, and loyal dog Bowie, she peacefully left this world on Saturday, July 13. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time to mourn their beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend.
Shannen Recently Spoke Up About Her Cancer Battle
Doherty shared with PEOPLE about the challenges she faces, expressing, “There are certainly days when I question, ‘Why me?’ But then I remind myself, ‘Why not me? Who else?” She then continued, asking “Who else is more deserving of this than me-none of us are.”
In 2017, Doherty disclosed that her breast cancer had returned after being in remission, but a few weeks ago she got bad news. “It will soon be revealed, in a matter of days or a week, that I am in stage 4-my cancer has returned, and that’s why I’m here,” Doherty told Good Morning America. “I don’t think I have fully come to terms with it. It’s a bitter pill to swallow in many ways.
90210 And Charmed
Shannen Doherty achieved stardom portraying Brenda Walsh in the iconic Beverly Hills, 90210, debuting in October 1990. Doherty departed from the series following the conclusion of the fourth season in 1994. (She would later make special guest appearances as the character in the 2008 revival of 90210.)
Following her rise to fame in Beverly Hills, Doherty secured the role of Prue Halliwell in Charmed, portraying the eldest of three witch sisters. In addition to her on-screen presence, she took on the role of director for multiple episodes; her departure from the show came at the conclusion of the third season in 2001.
Shannen Kept Working Despite Her Diagnosis
Doherty’s career has been a steady journey, marked by her foray into reality television with the short-lived Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty and her competing on Dancing with the Stars. In 2019, she made headlines by signing on to join the TV reboot of Beverly Hills, 90210, reprising her role as an adult version of the character that made her famous.
Despite being aware of her diagnosis, she chose to keep it a secret from the cast following the untimely passing of her co-star Luke Perry in March 2019 at age 52. Reflecting on this, Doherty expressed her shock on Good Morning America, stating, “It’s so strange to be diagnosed and then witness someone who appeared healthy pass away before me.”
Shannen Wanted To Prove To Herself She Could Keep Working
Doherty expressed that her involvement in the TV reboot, broadcasted last year on Fox, was a gesture of respect towards Perry. She said that it also served as a chance to showcase her ability to persevere in her career despite her health challenges. “I decided to join 90210, alongside Luke, without much fanfare because I wanted to demonstrate that individuals with stage 4 cancer can still thrive in the workplace,” she elaborated.
Shannen kept working as long as she possibly could until the illness began to get the best of her. Our condolences to Shannen’s family, past and recent co-stars, and friends.
