British royal family news reveals that to the end, stoic 96-year old Queen Elizabeth remained a force to be reckoned with, an example of equal parts grit and grace. She was after all the holder of a most remarkable record: seven decades in service to her country.

And yet the end of her reign was not without sadness, losing her husband one year before her death, and this year having to excise her son Prince Andrew from the monarchy.

Gyles Brandreth’s new book, Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, sheds a compelling light on the monarch’s last years. He had the cooperation of the royal family for the book, and then-Duchess of Cornwall, now Camilla, Queen Consort, said that her mother-in-law was simply “unstoppable.” Last April her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip, died, leaving her without her, “strength and stay.”

And yet the queen said after his death, “I’ve got to be sensible,” in regard to her health limitations.

Brandreth also reveals some fascinating revelations about the relationship between the queen and her husband. According to the Daily Mail, “When Prince Philip retired in 2017, he and the Queen would go for weeks without seeing each other, although they spoke regularly on the phone. While odd to some, she understood his wish ‘not to be fussed over’ and to ‘see out his days in his own way.”

However, Covid was to change that, with the couple finding a, “new comfort in each other’s company during lockdown and when it was lifted decided to spend more time together, travelling to Scotland and Sandringham, as well as at Windsor.”

Philip passed so quickly on April 9, 2021 that royal staff were unable to wake her in time to say goodbye.

Afterward her response to say, “Life goes on. It has too.” She kept her mind occupied, “Watching television, particularly dramas like Line of Duty.” Additionally, “Her renewed determination to keep up the pace of royal duties following the loss of her husband was in part because she did not want to give way to any form of self-pity My husband would certainly not have approved,’” she stated.

She also faced the difficult task of “firing” her son Andrew after he settled a sexual abuse lawsuit against him in February. After paying his accuser an out of court settlement he denied any guilt, but the PR damage was done. According to the author, “The Queen took a firm grip of things. To use the military jargon, there were only few days between flash and bang. Action was called for it and she took it.”

And yet the queen was adept at balancing her professional and personal roles as she:deliberately allowed herself to be photographed riding with Andrew in Windsor Great Park the day after she relieved him of his royal duties to show her personal support.” God Rest the Queen, there will never be another one like her.
