For example, Princess Catherine is now a patron of the hospital affiliated with her preventative chemotherapy and Princess Anne is the patron of 300 organizations which is why she’s known as the hardest working royal!

What exactly does having a patronage entail? Being a patron of a certain charity or organization means that the royal involved attends certain of its events, but the responsibility goes beyond a meet and greet. Here’s what to know.
The royal family’s official website states that there are “Over 1,000 organizations” which have a member of the Royal Family as patron or president and over half of them are related to the military.
Royal Family News – How Many Royal Patronages Are There?
At the core of the duty, representing a royal patronage entails giving publicity to a charity or organization.
Looked at another way, “the royals are brand ambassadors and influencers, only instead of promoting, IDK, dubious hair vitamins, they’re promoting The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.”
According to Cosmopolitan, King George II held the first patronage, with the Society of Antiquaries, a patronage currently held by The Duke of Gloucester.
Fun fact: all of the monarchs after King George IV have been patrons of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
Royal Family News – How Do Royals Get Patronages?
How do royals get assigned a patronage? It depends. Sometimes there is a personal connection to a organization, as is the case with Queen Camilla being patron of the Royal Osteoporosis Society “due to her mother and grandmother passing away from the disease.”
Once upon a time, Queen Elizabeth gave Meghan Markle the National Theater patronage based on her acting gigs.
Royal Family News – Is King Charles Cutting Down on Patronages?
Last year Reuters reported that the monarchy would shed hundreds of patronages and it remains to be seen how Prince William handles the topic once he’s monarch.
Last November he said “I can only describe what I’m trying to do and that’s trying to do it differently and I’m trying to do it for my generation. I’m doing it with maybe a smaller r in the royal, if you like, that’s maybe a better way of saying it.”
He added that his focus is on impacting “philanthropy, collaboration, convening and helping people … and I think we could do with some more empathetic leadership around the world.”
