Prior to joining the royal family, Meghan Markle was an American actress best known for her role in the paralegal drama “Suits”.
But after she tied the knot with Britain’s Prince Harry in 2018, she gave up her acting career to become a full time senior member of the Royal Family.
To help her assimilate into her new role, Sophie was assigned to take her under her wing, especially since Sophie had built a PR empire before becoming a part of the Royal Family.
However, even through the best wishes, Meghan and Harry couldn’t carry on working for “the firm”, as they called it, and left to find a footing and a different lifestyle in Hollywood.
Meghan Markle – Wanted To “Hit the Ground Running” And Rely On Her Husband To Learn About Royal Service
Upon marrying Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan pledged to “hit the ground running” on becoming a working royal.
In a new book, “Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait”, by royal expert Gyles Brandreth, who also knew several of the royals intimately, Brandreth writes: “The Queen (who, of course, had seen it all before) understood that Harry’s girl might find adjusting to Royal life ‘challenging to begin with’ (as she put it). ‘It is very jolty, but you soon get used to it’ – that was Her Majesty’s experience going back many years.”
Brandreth then continued by explaining why the Queen thought Countess Sophie was a perfect mentor for Meghan.
“To help Meghan, the Queen suggested that her daughter-in-law, Sophie Wessex, would be an ideal mentor. ‘Sophie can help show you the ropes,’ said the Queen.”
“Meghan made it clear that she did not feel she needed Sophie’s help. She had Harry.”
Sophie, who was raised in a middle-class family and had founded a PR company before marrying Prince Edward, was often compared to Meghan Markle, due to the huge transition they both underwent to become working royals.
Sophie Wessex – On Sharing the Same Experiences As Meghan Markle
In a rare interview with The Sunday Times, Sophie said that she can relate to Meghan’s experiences to becoming a new member of the Royal Family.
She commented: “Remember I’d had five years to adjust [to royal life]. And for our six-month engagement, I was even staying at Buckingham Palace. Not that you necessarily know how it will pan out.”
Then addressing the Sussexes’ exit from royal life, she added: “We all try to help any new members of the family.”
