British royal family news reveals that since bagging her magic prince, Meghan Sussex of Markle has made many statements about her childhood.
Not all of her statements have gone uncorrected. After five years of listening to La Meghan, discrepancies in her childhood tales are now glaringly apparent.
Between her Netflix reality show named for herself and the recently dropped Netflix show “With Love, Meghan” plus everything in between, here are some of the Duchess of Sussex’s inconsistencies regarding her upbringing.
Meghan Markle Was a Latchkey Kid
Talking down to Mindy Kaling in “With Love, Meghan” Meghan Markle claimed she was a feral kid: “I was a latchkey kid” a notion her estranged father Thomas Markle Sr. disputes.
He told the Daily Mail “After school I would either pick her up myself and we’d go out to eat or I’d send a car to bring her to the set [he was working on] … She was never a latchkey kid.”
Meghan’s estranged brother, Thomas Markle Jr. said she’s told “malarkey stories … for sympathy. We weren’t poor. She didn’t have to rub those two nickels together at Sizzler’s salad bar.”
Speaking of Sizzler’s, Meghan sent a 2021 letter to former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer claiming that she “grew up on the $4.99 salad bar at Sizzler … what I do remember was the feeling: I knew how hard my parents worked to afford this because even at five bucks, eating out was something special, and I felt lucky.”
Did Meghan Lie About Her Childhood?
In fact, according to BBC, Meghan attended private elementary school with her brother saying that his dad’s money “allowed Meg to go to the best schools and get the best training.”
Here’s another inconsistency. Meghan Markle told Mindy Kaling that she had to eat at Pollo Loco, Taco Bell, and Jack in the Box as a kid, but in March 2025 she told People: “Some of my favorite childhood moments are the meals that my mom would make. She’d make a lot of soul food. I remember she’d taken a Thai cooking class, so every week we had Thai BBQ chicken and spring rolls.”
Yet Another Malarkey Story
Meghan contradicted herself again on a 2016 episode of “Chopped Junior.” On it Meghan told a young chef that their dish “reminded me of the kind of food that I grew up eating in California — like that real, sort of farm-to-table fresh, really simple ingredients.”
